The Diet Of Ancient Egyptians

Bread and Cereal ● Bread and Cereal were the backbone of the diet. ● They were the first sophisticated bread makers. ● The Egyptians sweetened their bread with honey, dates, and fruit.

Vegetables ● The Nile made it easy to irrigate and grow vegetables. ● The most popular vegetables were beans, chick peas, lentils, and Egyptian lettuce. ● Onions and Garlic were used to keep disease away.

Fruit ● Dates are the most popular, high and sugar and protein. ● Grapes were also a favorite. ● Pomegranate was also eaten.

Meat ● The rich ate fish and wild poultry. ● The poor ate geese, ducks, quails and cranes.

Fish ● The fishes names were lepidotus and phragus. ● Nile perch were worshiped so they couldn't eat them. ● Most fish roasted and boiled.

Poultry ● Pork was eaten though the animal was associated with the god Seth. ● It was eaten a lot in lower in Egypt but not so much in upper Egypt. ● Chickens were bred for their meat.

Dairy Products ● Milk, cheese and butter are not written about in text but are believed to have been eaten. ● There are picture of people milking cows.

Fats and oils ● Beef and goat fat were used to flavor food. ● Egyptians had 21 different types of vegetable oils. ● Horseradish oil was very popular

Seasonings ● Sea salt was not used because of its connection to Seth. ● Pepper wasn't used either. ● Cinnamon, cumin and mustard were popular.

Sweeteners ● Sugar itself was not used as a sweetener but honey was very popular for the rich. ● Common people used fruits such as dates.

Meals ● Common meals were served with beer. ● Rich meals were served with wine. ● Every meal was served with bread. ● Egyptian always ate well.
