How many Times? Word Problems-Introduction Madhavi Ranade PRT

Situation A: There are 7 people in each house and there are 10 houses in a colony. How many people altogether live in that colony? Situation B: There are 7 people in one house and 10 people in other house. How many people live altogether in the two houses? What is the difference between the two situations?

7 people Situation A is shown as 7 people Situation B is shown as 7 people10 people

Situation A can be viewed as many equal groups making a big group whereas Situation B has unequal groups combined together. Lets recall Word Problem in Situation B can be solved as Number of people in house 1 (7 ) Number of people in house 2 (10) Number of people living in both houses ( ) = 17 people

Number of things in Group 1 Number of things in Group 2 Total Number of Things altogether It there are more than two groups, Number of things in Group 3 Situation A has 7 people +7 people+7people+7people+7people+7 people +7 people+ 7 people +7 people+ 7 people= 70 people REPEATED ADDITION of a same number can be called as multiplication 7 people is repeated 10 times so Total number of people in the colony are 10 times 7 Or 10 x 7 = 70 people.
