Jimi Hendrix James Lam

James Marshall Hendrix Born November 27, 1942 in Seattle, WA Father was in the Army, so Jimi attended many different schools First instument: Ukulele, age 12

Discovering His Love for Music Favorite musicians: BB King, Elvis & Muddy Waters Bought first acoustic used for $5 Switch the strings backwards and the guitar upside down First started electric guitar at age 13

Growing Up In high school, Jimi was arrested for being in a stolen car, and was given the choice of jail time or enlisting. May 1961, Hendrix joined the 101 st Airborne Division, Fort Campbell, Kentucky

Life in the Army He began playing guitar when off duty with local bands After little more than a year, in May 1962, the 26st jump, he breaks his ankle and he is discharged from the army.

The Beginning of His Music Career Summer 1963, Jimi played in bars throughout the south Winter 63, Jimi is sent to New York City by a Nashville promoter March 1964, he joined the Isley Brothers who were touring New York.

Moving on Up Winter 1965, Jimi starts playing with the Upsetters, main singer, Little Richard. Hendrix moves to New York with Little Richard. In late 1965, Hendrix was caught playing with Bobby Taylor and Tommy Chong and their band, Motown.

The Jimi Hendrix Experience The Animals guitarist noticed Jimi and sent him to London to create a band with musicians there. Hendrix chose bass guitarist (Noel Redding) and a drummer (Mitch Mitchell) to form the Jimi Hendrix Experience.

“Are You Experienced?” Dec. 1966, Jimi finished writing “Purple Haze”, which would soon be a #1 hit in the US. May 1967, “Are You Experienced?” was released in the UK, and soon after in America. Early June, he flies back to New York, just a week before his big show in the US.

Musician of the Year June 18, 1967, Monterey Pop Festival in California, Hendrix outplayed all other bands, and ends up lighting his guitar on fire at the end of his show. Hendrix begins playing many famous American places such as the Fillmore. He is interviewed by Time Magizine and is recommended #1 musician of the year.

An American Music Icon Summer of 68, he plays the Singer Bowl with The Doors. He is realitivly close with Bob Dylan, who lets him use songs such as All Along the Watchtower. Hendrix is a huge American icon and now being interviewed weekly.

The End of an Era 1969, Jimi was musician of the year again August 18, 1969, Northern New York Hendrix closed the 3 day Woodstock concert. September 18, 1970, Jimi Hendrix dies of unknown circumstances with his girlfriend in New York.
