Student Learning Objectives SPI IDENTIFY THE COMMON OUTCOME OF ALL CHEMICAL CHANGES SPI CLASSIFY COMMON SUBSATNCES AS ELEMNTS OR COMPOUNDS BASED ON THEIR SYMBOLS OR FORMULAS SPI INTERPRET THE RESULTS OF AN INVESTIGATION TO DETERMINE WHETHER A PHYSICAL OR CHEMICAL CHANGES HAS OCCURRED. SPI IDENTIFY THE REACTANTS AND PRODUCTS OF A CHEMICAL REACTION SPI RECOGNIZE THAT IN A CHEMICAL REACTION THE MASS OF THE REACTANTS IS EQUAL TO THE MASS OF THE PRODUCTS (LAW OF CONSERVATION OF MASS) TOC: #73 TYPES OF CHEMICAL REACTIONS NOTES

4 Types of Reactions: Synthesis ReactionSynthesis Reaction Decomposition ReactionDecomposition Reaction Single-Displacement ReactionSingle-Displacement Reaction Double-Displacement ReactionDouble-Displacement Reaction Video
Synthesis Reactions: Synthesis reaction is a reaction in which two or more substances combine to form one new compound. Pattern: Pattern: A + B AB Ex. N2 + H2 NH3 Ex. N2 + H2 NH3
Decomposition Reactions: A decomposition reaction is a reaction in which a single compound breaks down to form two or more simpler substances. Decomposition is the reverse of synthesis. Pattern: Pattern: AB A + B Ex. Ag2O Ag + O2
Single-Displacment Reactions: A single-displacement reaction is a reaction in which one element replaces another element that is part of a compound. The products of single- displacement reactions are a new compound and a different element. In a single-displacement reaction, a more reactive element can displace a less reactive element in a compound. Pattern: Pattern: A + BX AX + B Ex. K + MgBr KBr + Mg
Double-Displacment Reactions: A double-displacement reaction is a reaction in which ions from two compounds exchange places. One of the products of this type of reaction is often a gas or a precipitate. Pattern: Pattern: AX + BY AY + BX Ex. KNO3 + H2CO3 K2CO3 + HNO3
