GUIDE FOR THE GROUP DISCUSSION AND DEMO LESSON The title of my presentation is GUIDE FOR THE GROUP DISCUSSION AND DEMO LESSON. Group Discussion as explained by Niimi sensei which you will have in the morning right after my presentation…. And also for the Demo Lesson which you will do this afternoon. We are providing this guide: - so that the output of all the groups will be uniform - and so that you can do your discussion and demo lesson smoothly.

Guide for the Group Discussion (How to Make a Lesson Plan) Ok, let’s start with GUIDE FOR THE GROUP DISCUSSION which you will do this morning…right after my presentation. Later, in your group discussion, you are going to make a LESSON PLAN… 皆さん、Lesson Planを作っていますか? 何を書いていますか? Basically, in a Lesson Plan, we write the steps in teaching a “bunkei” or sentence pattern…. You might wonder for which bunkei you are going to make a LESSON PLAN. (as mentioned by Niimi sensei) you will draw lots and be assigned a PARTICULAR BUNKEI.

STEPS IN TEACHING A BUNKEI 1. Goi Donyuu 2. Wakaraseru 3. Oboesaseru So, the lesson plan that you will make will consist of the ff: 1. Goi Donyuu- is introducing the goi that you will use in the bunkei. 2. Wakaraseru- is introducing a bunkei in a context of a situation. 3. Oboesaseru- is the pattern practice for kuchinarashi or for getting used to saying the bunkei…(that’s why oboesaseru) 4. Tsukawaseru- is the portion when you let the students apply the bunkei in a situation. (facilitators will give further details) 4. Tsukawaseru

1. Goi Donyuu Pick out the goi to be used in your bunkei Make drawings suited for your Learner group Maximum of 6 Make drawings or flash cards For Goi Donyuu, you will pick out the goi to be used in your bunkei…(click) - suited for your learner group - maximum of 6 for uniformity Later on, you will be provided with a GOI LIST for your particular learner group for reference. After you have picked out the goi, (click) - Make the drawings or flash cards.

Wakaraseru Think of a situation Use previously learned goi & bunkei Applicable for your learner group Think of a situation Where the bunkei can be used Objective: To introduce the meaning and the structure of the bunkei through the situation. The next step is WAKARASERU. Think of a situation (click) applicable for your learner group (click) and where the bunkei can be used…(click) The objective is to introduce the meaning and structure of the bunkei through the situation. For example, the bunkei is ….(click the hyperlink) Use previously learned goi & bunkei

Make a Substitution Drill 3. Oboesaseru Maximum of 6 cues Make a Substitution Drill Include introduced goi In Oboesaseru portion, make a Substitution Drill, maximum of 6 cues, include the introduced goi. I’ll show you an example of Substitution Drill (click)

Watashi wa Starbucks ga suki desu. Sample of Substitution Drill Watashi wa Starbucks ga suki desu. 1. Ringo 2. Sakana 3. Tokoyaki 4. Sushi (show the substitution drill) This is an example of Substitution Drill. In your group discussion, make cues for your substitution drill. Here, you use the goi that you introduced in the Goi Donyuu. 5. Wain 6. Biiru

4. Tsukawaseru Make a drill or activity where   the bunkei can be applied Make the instruction for   the drill/activity For Tsukawaseru…(just read everything in the slide) For our bunkei: Watashi wa Starbucks ga suki desu An example of a drill would be to let the students open up to their classmates 1. by using the bunkei and 2. mentioning something they really like Here is an example of Tsukawaseru Drill (click) Think of the example for   the drill/activity

(Instruction and Example) Tsukawaseru Drill (Instruction and Example) (Instruction) T: Ja, minasan, reveal yourselves to your classmates by using the bunkei and by mentioning what you really like. (Example) In Tsukawaseru Drill, always give - clear instruction - and give an example Watashi wa Starbucks ga suki desu. This is true for me.

Oboesaseru & Tsukawaseru -teacher gives cues -students say sentences even if cues do not apply to them. Oboesaseru -teacher doesn’t give cues (situation only) -students are given freedom in their choice of words Tsukawaseru To help you understand better the difference between OBOESASERU and TSUKAWASERU… In Oboesaseru portion, teacher gives cues (read everything in the slide) In Tsukawaseru portion…(read everything in the slide) Going back to Oboesaseru slide (click)

Watashi wa Starbucks ga suki desu. Sample of Substitution Drill Watashi wa Starbucks ga suki desu. 1. Ringo 2. Sakana 3. Tokoyaki For example, even if a student doesn’t like ringo, He has to say: “Watashi wa ringo ga suki desu.” For the Tsukawaseru portion, teacher doesn’t give cues… Like in our example, the teacher says reveal yourselves by using the bunkei and the students are free to say their preference. So, I hope this will help you for the group discussion. Let’s proceed to the Guide for the Demo Lesson (click) 4. Sushi 5. Wain 6. Biiru

Guide for the Demo Lesson In your Demo Lesson, you will just present the Lesson Plan that you made during the Group Discussion which consists of ….(click to show the goi donyuu, WOT)

STEPS IN TEACHING A BUNKEI 1. Goi Donyuu 2. Wakaraseru 3. Oboesaseru 4. Tsukawaseru

Goi Donyuu Show the drawing or flash card Let the students Mention the goi Let the students say the goi Here are the tips on how to do the Goi Donyuu (read everything in the slide) Demo: (While showing the picture) T: Ringo (2x, slowly) Hai, minasan, RINGO (say in a normal speed) *gesture (everybody) 3x *one by one *final chorus So, you will do this for all the goi. In chorus, individually

2. Wakaraseru c. Write the bunkei on the board a. Create the actual situation in class b. Let the students say the bunkei d. Explain only if necessary Create the actual situation in class This is what I showed you earlier: “Minasan, asagohan o tabemashita ka? “Koohii o nomimashita ka?” Do you remember? This is how you create the situation in class to introduce the bunkei.. So after you have introduced the bunkei….”Watashi wa Starbucks ga suki desu.” Let the students say the bunkei… Then write the bunkei on the board and explain only if necessary. (ideally, the teacher should have been abled to show the meaning and structure of the bunkei through the situation.

Sakana (Example) 3. Takoyaki T: Starbucks 4. Sushi S: Watashi wa Starbucks ga suki desu. 5. Wain Demo: sample 1, 2, 3 and so on and so forth, then go the individual round… 6. Biiru
