SeaDataNet Pan-European infrastructure for Ocean & Marine Data management An Integrated research Infrastructure Initiative (I3) SeaDataNet Overview and Management Catherine Maillard Kick-Off Meeting, June , Heraklion, Greece

SeaDataNet 2 Kick-off Meeting June , Heraklion, Greece Objectives SeaDataNet aims to develop an efficient data management infrastructure for the present and future ocean observing and forecasting programmes, able to handle the diversity and large volume of data collected via the Pan-European oceanographic fleet and the new observation systems, both in real-time and delayed mode. It is based on a semi-distributed system that incorporates and enhance the existing NODC network and satellite data centres. An important technical development activity will make the data centres interoperable as a virtual data centre, able to deliver integrated data, meta-data and products of controlled quality through a unique portal.

SeaDataNet 3 Kick-off Meeting June , Heraklion, Greece SeaSataNet Consortium represents a unique group of 49 partners from in-situ and satellite oceanographic data centres hosted by major oceanographic institutes of 35 countries bordering the Baltic, the Black Sea, the Mediterranean and the North-East Atlantic, modelling centres, IOC and ICES Atlantic Global Ocean North Sea Norwegian Sea Arctic Seas Mediterranean Sea Black Sea Baltic Sea

SeaDataNet 4 Kick-off Meeting June , Heraklion, Greece A Network of experienced Data Centres National Oceanographic Data Centres (NODC)  In charge of the national marine data and information archives  Official contact points for International Exchange (IOC/IODE)  Responsible of, or participating in the data management structure of several international scientific projects: WOCE, JGOFS, MTPII-MATER, CANIGO, OMEX, ARGO, MERSEA etc. Leaders of Data Management Concerted Actions  MEDAR/MEDATLAS II - Mediterranean Data Archaeology and Rescuehttp://  SEA-SEARCH – Gateway to Oceanographic and Marine Data & Information in Europe Satellite data centres

SeaDataNet 5 Kick-off Meeting June , Heraklion, Greece Work Plan of the project Technical Annex The Integrated Research Infrastructure Initiative (I3) project includes three types of activities I- Networking Activities (NA) II- Transnational Access (TA) to data, meta-data and products III- Joint Research Activities (JRA) to develop and improve the system  Technical research activities  Scientific research activities

SeaDataNet 6 Kick-off Meeting June , Heraklion, Greece ->aim to managing, organizing and promoting the infrastructure NA1: Project Management NA2: Infrastructure Management, Organization and Monitoring NA3: Training and Capacity building Maintenance of the Pan-European Directories  NA4 : Cruises Summary Reports (ROSCOP/CSR)  NA5 : Marine Data of research laboratories (EDMED/MEDI) + Permanent Observing Systems (EDIOS)  NA6 : Common Data Index (CDI) of data centres  NA7 : Marine Research Projects inventory (EDMERP) NA8: Communication - outreach  Data providers & Users Marketing and feedback  International Conferences I- Networking activities (NA)

SeaDataNet 7 Kick-off Meeting June , Heraklion, Greece A Network of 40 data platforms:  NODC/Designated National Agencies for International Exchange of marine data and information (IOC/IODE)  Satellite Data Centres Providing Basic Data Management Services II- Transnational Access to data, meta-data, products Models output Land Data Systems Atmospheric Data System Catalogues Quality control Data sets aggregation Product generation Web browser Safeguarding Data discovery User Regular deliveries on ftp sites or usual media OBSERVING SYSTEMS ANALYSIS & MODELLING

SeaDataNet 8 Kick-off Meeting June , Heraklion, Greece V1= Preliminary version installed on 11 interoperable test platforms  Anavyssos platform  Brest platform  Hamburg platform  La Spezia platform  Norrkoping platform  Obninsk platform  Madrid platform  The Hague platform  Swindon platform  Toulouse platform  Trieste platform II – Remote Access from TA V2: Final version installed by step on the other data platforms V0: present status: each DC interrogated and sending nonstandardized data separately

SeaDataNet 9 Kick-off Meeting June , Heraklion, Greece to develop the distributed system that incorporates and enhances, the currently existing infrastructures and technology JRA1: Development of standards JRA2:Technical development of the interoperable system JRA3: Development of Portable data management software based on ODV (AWI) for capacity building and training - off line data management system JRA4: Development of Geostatistic Methodology & Software (based on GHER VIM) for Regional & global statistical products JRA5-JRA9: Regional and Global Products preparation & qualification III-Joint Research Activities

SeaDataNet 10 Kick-off Meeting June , Heraklion, Greece JRA1: Standard development in cooperation with the ad hoc international authorities (ICES, IOC, JCOMM) for communication of meta data, observation data and gridded data (ISO, Marine XML) to insure the common data and products quality level  Automatic and Visual checks  Without data modification  All these standards are used both for the technical development and for operating the TA infrastructure

SeaDataNet 11 Kick-off Meeting June , Heraklion, Greece Version One (V1) JRA2: Development of the Interoperable system components Version Two (V2)

SeaDataNet 12 Kick-off Meeting June , Heraklion, Greece JRA3: Portable data management software To train young data managers in data QC and standardization according to the project protocols To equip new data centres To provide a tool for processing and visualizing in-situ and remote sensing data  Ocean Data View (ODV) extension

SeaDataNet 13 Kick-off Meeting June , Heraklion, Greece Technical Task Team The technical developments in data management represents an important part of the activity, even when using existing elements of the new communication technology : selection, interfacing, adaptation, documentatino, maintenance.. SeaDataNet Technical Task Team will design, develop and install the common software components of the system, and make recommendations for its further evolution and sustainability.

SeaDataNet 14 Kick-off Meeting June , Heraklion, Greece To check the system operability To cross-check the data To assess the coherence and compatibility of existing products To widen the data dissemination. The tasks include: Development of common geostatistics methodology & software for computing and/or checking the regional gridded fields and statistics software (JRA4, based on GHER VIM) Products preparation over five zones: the Mediterranean (JRA5), the Black Sea (JRA6), the Baltic (JRA7), the Northern and Polar Seas (JRA8) and the Atlantic and Global ocean (JRA9) Products Development
