FermiLinux STS Scientific Linux 6 Connie Sieh HEPIX Spring 2009 May 25, 2009

FermiLinux STS /Scientific Linux 6 Presentation Overview ● Fermi Linux STS 10/11 ● Scientific Linux 6 issues

FermiLinux STS ● STS – Short Term Support ● STS 10 Based on Fedora 10 ● Changed graphics for trademark issues ● Fermi stuff – Added Kerberos and Security Baseline packages – Added SL_desktop_tweaks – Remove items against our Security Baseline – Enable auto yum security updates to FNAL mirror

FermiLinux STS Why ● New Hardware that SL 5x doesn't work on – Desktop and laptops only ● Fermi wanted a kerberized Live CD ● Investigate the release itself since SL 6 will have features from Fedora 10/11

FermiLinux STS What ● Only DVD install created, i386 and x86_64 – Created quarterly ● Only i386 Live CD created – Created monthly – Gnome and KDE versions ● Same support policy as Fedora

FermiLinux STS How ● Use Revisor to build a custom release ● Revisor contains code from pungi, imgcreate – Bugs in live CD creation, so used imgcreate instead – Issues with rpms in the distro that “break” builds, mostly dependency errors

FermiLinux STS How ● Created scripts to make rebuilds easy ● run 1 script per arch for install DVD ● 1 script for Gnome and KDE Live ● Works well unless the “distro” is broken, mostly dependency problems – Fedora updates distro frequently with new features and bugs fixes

FermiLinux STS Issues and Things learned ● Kerberized Live CD is popular ● Users use STS when they really should be using SLF 5x ● Experience on newer SL base is valuable ● Plan on creating STS 11 based on Fedora 11

Scientific Linux 6 Note before we proceed ● Fedora 10 or 11 is not the same as RHEL 6 – RHEL 6 is based off the latest release of Fedora – RedHat can change anything they want ● We do not know RedHat's time line – They could base RHEL6 off Fedora 11 or 12

Scientific Linux 6 Issues We wanted to look at what might be in SL 6 ● New Packages ● New Boot Up Structure ● New Installer ● How Can We Do Sites ● Experience with SL rpms on Fedora 10/11

Scientific Linux 6 Issues Packages ● KDE 4.2, major update ● KVM vs XEN ● Package-Kit added and Yum updated ● Other Misc Packages that RedHat added ● Porting of current SL rpms ● AFS and XFS, do they work?

Scientific Linux 6 Issues New Boot Up Structure ● Starting Packages In Parallel – How do we configure past customized packages ● Plymouth Graphical Startup – How do we configure this – How do we change the graphics

Scientific Linux 6 Issues New installer ● Become familiar with the code ● See if our old changes still work or are needed ● How are they doing kernel modules now

Scientific Linux 6 Issues Revisor ● Can we use Revisor to build the installation CD's ● Can we use Revisor to build live CD's ● Can Revisor be used to replace sites – We think it's worth the effort to try

FermiLinux STS Issues and Things learned ● Once the scripts and config files were created it works well unless distro is broken, this should not be a issue with SL 6 since it is less volatile ● Revisor has bugs ● Revisor was not updated for Fedora 10 until after Fedora 10 was released ●
