The Race for New Resources The Arctic

A new and cold war ! Look at the information in the two text books plus your own research on the search for new energy resources within the Arctic Circle. Make sure you include information on: What are the potentials for energy development Why is exploitation needed? What are the issues with development of this area? What conflicts are likely to occur between the key players? Complete a summary table showing the costs and benefits of drilling for oil in the Arctic ( organise your work into sections – economic, social, environmental)

Oil Sands /Tar sands in Canada Use the information in the 2 text books (pages Parrot and page Globe) to answer the following questions:- Identify the players involved in mining tar sands in Canada. Draw up and complete a conflict matrix to show which agree or disagree with the developments Describe what the matrix shows you about the issues linked to exploitation of this resource – is it sustainable? Do you think Canada should have oil sands as the main alternative to fossil fuel or should they go for renewables? Justify your ideas. Find out more about the oil sands story by looking at the website
