Students who demonstrate understanding can: MS-ESS2-2.Construct an explanation based on evidence for how geoscience processes have changed Earth's surface at varying time and spatial scales. HS-ESS2-1.Develop a model to illustrate how Earth’s internal and surface processes operate at different spatial and temporal scales to form continental and ocean-floor features. Asking questions Planning and carrying out investigations Analyzing and interpreting data Using mathematics and computational thinking Constructing explanations Engaging in argument from evidence Obtaining, evaluating and communicating information MS-ESS3-2 - Analyze and interpret data on natural hazards to forecast future catastrophic events and inform the development of technologies to mitigate their effects. HS-ESS3-1 - Construct an explanation based on evidence for how the availability of natural resources, occurrence of natural hazards, and changes in climate have influenced human activity. Cause and Effect: Mechanism and Explanation Events have causes, sometimes simple, sometimes multifaceted. A major activity of science is investigating and explaining causal relationships and the mechanisms by which they are mediated. Such mechanisms can then be tested across given contexts and used to predict and explain events in new contexts. Systems and System Models Defining the system under study— specifying its boundaries and making explicit a model of that system— provides tools for understanding and testing ideas that are applicable throughout science and engineering. What are some challenges to predicting earthquakes? Now that you understand the variables that can be manipulated in the EarthQuake Machine propose to your teacher a question and investigation you hope to conduct.

What factors might limit our ability to predict earthquakes? Let’s share some of the investigations that were constructed. Think about the nature of the conversation you had. How does it compare to what we hear out from the way we normally engage students in scientific investigations?
