2015 Curriculum Changes for Interior Design at JCCC Darla Green

How do you know when curriculum needs to change?

 When the program is no longer serving the needs of the community in it’s current format. This could be due to a variety of things – changes in the market, changes in technology etc…  Our Curriculum should be on a rotation and updated to stay current as our industry incorporates, Marketing, Management, Design, Products and Technology. This idea of rotation will vary from program to program. For example: Interior Design should be updated more frequently than say - math which might be a lot longer time frame.

 Program review results will be a valuable resource in seeing what curriculum needs to be updated. How do you know when curriculum needs to change?

Where do you Start? Program Planning Model: Courtesy of RoseMary S. Caffarella

Where do you Start?  First: we explored data from the following sources to determine the changes needed:  1. Industry  2. Students  3. Professional Standards  Second: we defined the purpose of our program.

Looking at the Data  Industry data  We looked at information from:  Our Advisory Board  Professional Organization reports (ASID, IIDA, NKBA)  Industry trend reports  Local Industry leaders

Looking at the Data  Student data  We used information from Student Exit Interviews.

Looking at the Data  Professional Standards  CIDA: four year institution accrediting body  NKBA: Kitchen & Bath accrediting body  USGBC: LEED professional standards  JCCC: SLO’s

Defining the purpose of your Program.  For our program, we wanted to serve our students by providing multiple pathways for students to achieve their goals.  These pathways needed to be usable and stackable.  We looked at our data in combination with serving our community and came up with the follow skill sets for a graduate of our program to acquire from our degrees and certificates.

Defining the purpose of your Program Developing Program Objectives

Defining the purpose of your Program.  For our program, we wanted to serve our community by providing multiple pathways for students to achieve their goals.  These pathways needed to be usable and stackable.  We looked at our data in combination with serving our community and came up with the follow program objectives.

What we needed our program to do for students based on facts.  We wanted our program to serve the students seeking a stand alone degree.  We wanted our program to serve the students seeking to transfer to 4 year institutions.  We wanted our program to serve the students seeking a Kitchen & Bath degree. (NKBA accreditation)  We wanted our program to serve the enterprising students seeking to managing their own business.  We wanted our program to provide sustainability training across all courses.

Interior Design AAS  The focus for this degree:  Stand alone: meet the standards to sit for the licensing exam. Able to be an effective residential or commercial designer.  Transfer: able to transfer to a 4 year institution. Using the CIDA Professional Standards – we mapped the required competencies to each course in the degree.

Kitchen & Bath AAS  The focus for this degree:  Stand alone: Ability to sit for licensing exam. Ability to be an effective Kitchen and Bath designer.  NKBA Accreditation: Our program is up for reaccreditation in Using the NKBA Body of Knowledge – we mapped the required competencies to each course in the degree.

Interior Design Management & Marketing  The focus of this degree:  Stand alone: Ability to be an effective Design Manager or Design Marketing department member.  Transfer: Ability to transfer to the OttawaU at JCCC to receive a bachelors in Business Administration: concentration in marketing.

Sustainability  Throughout all curriculum. Over 70% of the Interior Design curriculum includes sustainability.

Certificates  We also, wanted our program to have steps to achieving these degrees. We have identified certificates that can be earned that will also step into the AAS degrees.  Interior Staging  1 semester  Interior Design Sales  2 semester
