Protein Synthesis Inhibitors

TETRACYCLINEs broad-spectrum, bacteriostatic antibiotics

Adverse effects: Gastric discomfort Effects on calcified tissues Fatal hepatotoxicity Phototoxicity Vestibular problems Pseudotumor cerebri Superinfections

MACROLIDES bacteriostatic, cidal at higher doses

 An interaction with digoxin: the antibiotic eliminates a species of intestinal flora that ordinarily inactivates digoxin, thus leading to greater reabsorption of the drug from the enterohepatic circulation

CHLORAMPHENICOL either bactericidal or (more commonly) bacteriostatic, depending on the organism

Adverse effects: Anemias Gray baby syndrome Interactions

CLINDAMYCIN

QUINUPRISTIN/DALFOPRISTIN Bactericidal Long postantibiotic effect

Adverse effects: Venous irritation Arthralgia and myalgia Hyperbilirubinemia Interactions

LINEZOLID Bacteriostatic cidal against the streptococci and Clostridium perfringens

patients are cautioned not to consume large quantities of tyramine-containing foods

AMINOGLYCOSIDES Bactericid

Adverse effects: Ototoxicity Nephrotoxicity Neuromuscular paralysis Allergic reactions
