H.-G. Moser, PXD, July 12, 2016 IBBelle: Status & Plans 1 2-phase CO 2 cooling system for PXD and SVD Minimal temperature: - 40 o C (intended: -30 o C) Cooling power: 3 kW(needed: ~1060 W) Developed by NIKHEF (MARCO prototype built at MPP) Version for ATLAS IBL (built by NIKHED/CERN, some components by MPP) In operation at CERN Copy* for Belle II under construction at MPP *except: control system changes from PVSS to EPICs

H.-G. Moser, PXD, July 12, 2016 Flex Tubes 2 Dismountable & rotatable concentric joint (at manifold) - Parts produced Split (in-flow and return) at Belle side - Parts produced Flex tubes to be produced at DESY Components (tubes) delivered to DESY Installation in October 2016

H.-G. Moser, PXD, July 12, Safety Certification Certification by KEK Condition: p max < 80 bar* Components made by MPP (not CE certified): He leak test Dye penetration test by MPP, checked by KEK N 2 pressure test Inspection by KEK (at MPP): June 29/30 Short (2h) tests up to 160 bar Long term tests (24 h) at 110 bar and 60 bar (as required by KEK) Components tested and passed Inspection by KEK passed *Originally specified for 110 bar (CERN IBL) Needed to change safety valves and interlocks Reduce fill level of CO 2 Operation is not compromised since our system volume is much smaller and needs less CO 2 than IBL

H.-G. Moser, PXD, July 12, Software Plan: convert control software from PVSS to EPICS An EPICS version already exists (M. Ritzert) configuration of PLC ok IBBelle operation can be controlled by EPICS configuration data get corrupted when read from database (fixed) graphics needs to be improved more diagnostic options EPICS needs to be installed again (PC crashed) Could need a PLC software expert

H.-G. Moser, PXD, July 12, Commissioning 1.Install and debug software (necessary changes, EPICS!): PLC EPICS: 2.Check complete setup (with CERN expert) 3.Basic functionality tests (SCADA instructions and expert commands). 4.Pressurize complete system with N 2 and check for tightness. 5.Fill with liquid CO 2, run without insulation (cannot reach design temperature) 6.Complete foam insulation 7.Operate at design temperature 8.Safety inspection => June 29/30 9.Long term tests => July and later at KEK 10.Response to change of operation conditions (load on/off…) 11.Exercise maintenance and emergency scenarios.

H.-G. Moser, PXD, July 12, First Ice May 17-19: first operation (with Bart Verlaat, CERN) Since then: Junction box connected (dummy heat load) Operated from -5°C to -20°C Heat loads up to 3kW -10°C) Main activity: Tuning of PID parameters of chiller for stable operations

H.-G. Moser, PXD, July 12, Operation with heat load Commissioning (insulated, with heater in Junction Box) T_set = -30°, ~12 g/s, heater power 0-3kW T_set kept constant at -30°C T_heater went to -29°C (pressure drop in return line) Supercooling of CO2 after condenser constant at 15°C Compressor frequency went from 30Hz to ~60Hz (full capacity is 70Hz) => Sufficient cooling power T_set T_heater power Compressor freq. superheating

H.-G. Moser, PXD, July 12, Operation with heat load Commissioning (insulated, with heater in Junction Box) T_set = -35°, ~9 g/s, heater power 0-2kW T_set kept constant at -35°C (compressor suction at 0.69 bar) T_heater went to -29°C at 2kW(pressure drop in return line) Supercooling of CO2 after condenser constant at 15°C Compressor frequency went from 30Hz to ~69Hz (full capacity is 70Hz) (*) had to change compressor suction from 1.0 bar to 0.69 bar to increase cooling power => Sufficient cooling power but runs out of steam for >2kW T_set T_heater power Compressor freq. superheating T_set T_heater Compressor frequncy 1000W 1250W 1500W 2000W (*)

H.-G. Moser, PXD, July 12, 2016 To do at Munich Fix flowmeters (send back to factory, still not working) Calibrate level sensors, add weight sensors to monitor CO2 level Convert fully to EPICS Continue commissioning & tuning of PID parameters Ship to KEK in July/August (procedure agreed, in contact with shipping & packaging company) IBBelle weighed: 2.4 t (crane limit at KEK: 4.5 t )

H.-G. Moser, PXD, July 12, Status at KEK UNIT A UNIT B (laterl) CO 2 line Pump removal Room and location identified and checked Enough space for servicing and 2 nd unit Long (32m) foam insulated transfer line installed short connection pieces will be made once IBBelle and Junction Box/Manifolds are in place (to fit exactly) 2.1 m 0.6 m1.5 m >0.6 m For sole noid

H.-G. Moser, PXD, July 12, Locations of Junction Box and Manifoldes identified

H.-G. Moser, PXD, July 12, 2016 Services 12 Compressed air (6 bar, ok) flexible tube (standard) will be provided by MPP sample of connection pipe at KEK Water pipe connection (25°C, 3 bar) Flexible hose sufficient. Sample of connection type at KEK. Network Lan required, power for switch close to JB (Ito-san) CO 2 connection IBBelle  transfer line  JB VCR, 3/8 and 1/2 inch. CO 2 Connection JB manifolds: VCR, 3/8 and 1/2 inch. Need tray for tubes and cables (to give headroom). Vacuum for Flex lines: bar => ok 400V 3-phase transformer existing unit not to specs => will be replaced

H.-G. Moser, PXD, July 12, 2016 Still to do 13 Monitoring of environment (humidity, temperature, CO 2 warning): R404a filling: By company. Quantity: 12 kg. Needed early October CO 2 filling: by us or KEK group, need 3 bottles 50kg (with rising pipe) in B1 Crane tool Fork to lift pumps with the crane (only if unit B installed) All agreed with KEK in a meeting in May 2016

H.-G. Moser, PXD, July 12, Commissioning at KEK Shipment in July/August => 40 days => arrival in September formalities in preparation with KEK (Tsuboyama-san) Commissioning starting in October (by MPP team) => Fill chiller with R404A => Start operation with internal loop or JB directly connected => Final location of JB and connection of transfer lines => Commission with JB only and test heater => Include manifolds and flex tubes (to be installed in October) Of course: vacuum and pressure tests integration of EPICS interlocks (e.g. flex tube vacuum) Training of KEK operation team

H.-G. Moser, PXD, July 12, Summary Construction is almost completed (apart from insulation) IBBelle operational -30°C demonstrated) Commissioning started Safety Certification by KEK done Delivery to KEK in July/August 2016 KEK is preparing services (power, air, cooling water, transfer lines) Start manufacturing of flex lines (length decided, material delivered to DESY) IBBelle will be operational for Beast Phase II
