CALICE Collaboration Meeting May 2011 Roman Pöschl LAL Orsay Report from the Technical Board CALICE Collaboration Meeting CERN May 2011

CALICE Collaboration Meeting May 2011 Disclaimer: Will concentrate in this talk on the conducted and planned major test beams. Apologies for not mentioning all activities

CALICE Collaboration Meeting May 2011 Role of Technical Board - Important executive body of CALICE - Keeping track of activities - Forum of experts of different detector technologies - Foster collaboration between different projects - Identification of needs for co-ordination and ressources - Technical preparation of strategic decisions to be taken by CALICE steering board - TB can (and maybe should?) be the main communication channel between CALICE and testbeam sites At least when preparing major beam test At least it has to ensure that this communication happens

CALICE Collaboration Meeting May The main projects since Casablanca - Concluding the “Physics Prototype Phase” - Phase CALICE I RPC DHCAL Physics Prototype of W-HCAL - Preparing/Realising the “Technological Prototype Phase” - Phase CALICE II Several prototypes - SDHCAL-GRPC - SDHCAL with Micromegas - SiW Ecal Common effort with ScintEcal - AHCAL

CALICE Collaboration Meeting May The W-Hcal W-Hcal Remark W-Hcal results important for CLIC CDR

CALICE Collaboration Meeting May

7 T3B – Timing structure of hadronic shower

CALICE Collaboration Meeting May

9 US-DHCAL and “associates” Setup on CALICE stage as of October 2010 Test beams at FNAL: Run period October 2010: Combined running with TCMT 38/10 Run period January 2011: Standalone with TCMT replaced by RPCs Run period April 2011: Combined running with SiW Ecal → To come: Run period May 2011: Standalone (partially) in rotated position

CALICE Collaboration Meeting May Combined running SiW Ecal – DHCAL in April Conlcudes phase CALICE I calorimeter cells World record!!! - About 200k events each for energy points between 2 And 120 GeV - Whole CALICE infracstructure employed Detectors, DAQ and peripherals - Another clear proof of functional CALICE structure

CALICE Collaboration Meeting May Software for recent test beams Software coordination: Angela Timoce Lucaci → Shaojun Lu

CALICE Collaboration Meeting May Preparation of GRPC SDHCAL test beam - Imminent major prototype of CALICE 40 layers equipped with GRPCs 3 thresholds => Semi-digital - TB review meeting on 3/2/11 at Lyon Citation from review meeting summary submitted to CALICE SB (March 2011) “The progress of the GRPC-SDHCAL was presented in a coherent and convincing manner and the CALICE TB congratulates the group for the very promising status. The CALICE TB could identify no point which would compromise the test beams plans for 2011.” - Progress steadily monitored within CALICE TB 40 layers # 5 λ INT Vital for CALICE input to DBD

CALICE Collaboration Meeting May Intermezzo: Technical support by CERN - During early PCB assembly SDHCAL suffered from a number of defective ASICs → Dedicated investigation by CERN bonding and material lab CALICE benefits a lot from the access to the CERN facilities (Wire bonding of SiW Ecal ASICS to PCBs) Thanks a lot This should not diminish technical support by the other major labs FNAL, KEK, DESY but since we are currently at CERN …

CALICE Collaboration Meeting May Impressions from SDHCAL construction Delivery to CERN of mechanical structure at the 1 st of June 2011

CALICE Collaboration Meeting May Status of DAQ for Technological Prototypes XDAQ

CALICE Collaboration Meeting May Hardware provided by UK groups Drop out of UK groups essentially caught by french groups Transfer of information works smoothly - SDHCAL DAQ 1m 2 prototypes of the SDHCAL are read out by USB based DAQs About to complete step towards Ethernet/HDMI DAQ Firmware of components DIF, LDA, CCC ready Firmware development benefitted (also) from early decision by SiW Ecal to move towards CALICE DAQ 2 - XDAQ will be s/w frame for DAQ Interface to CALICE DAQ 2 ready (?) SiW Ecal and AHCAL about to integrate Status of DAQ for Technological Prototypes

CALICE Collaboration Meeting May Towards s/w for Technological Prototypes ● Readout reassembly simulation – Uses SystemC + low-level routine s 1 ROC “f” frames O D R pkt s R O C ch ain s. Ev ent s R O C Da ta LCI O Scheme by D.Decotigny (LLR) And Then? Interface online/offline? Data Format Proposal exist For SDHCAL Needs tight communication between DAQ team, CALICE Software Team and ILC Core software Team CALICE specific: Gerald Grenier to collaborate with s/w coordinator for SDHCAL Other detectors

CALICE Collaboration Meeting May CERN CALICE applied for 20 weeks of test beam at SPS CERN-SPSC submitted officially on 19/11/10 Short version 3 weeks earlier, only experiment who has submitted proposal Summary of request: - Presentation in front of SPS committee on 18/1/11 Positive feedback, good CALICE record on past test beams emphasised by SPS committee, did expect about 70% of requested time - Last SPS scheduled assigned about 45% of requested time to CALICE … and time slots (very) different from request CERN SPS largely overbooked, however assignment of beam time w/o visible request! Schedule obsolete after CERN North TAX problems before Easter Organisation of beam resumption not clear at the moment Strong ATLAS constraints

CALICE Collaboration Meeting May “CALICE days” to be compared with 140 days requested Obsolete ~today

CALICE Collaboration Meeting May Towards DBD... - CALICE TB has started a discussion on criteria for technological Readiness → Discussion not intensified due to priority of current test beam issues - Strategy is to define readiness criteria ourselves and present them to concepts (and RD) Criteria to be defined by TB and approved by CALICE SB → (Latest) next CALICE meeting - Will ask for endorsement by DESY PRC (or succeeding body)

CALICE Collaboration Meeting May Summary and outlook - Since Casablanca several beam test with large (and smaller) devices were conducted DHCAL standalone and combined SiW Ecal ↔ DHCAL => “CALICE I mission fulfilled” Data taking with W-Hcal at CERN PS → SPS in SDHCAL preparation well advanced 1 m 3 about to be ready for data taking in June 2011 at SPS - Beam request to CERN SPS committee 42% of requested time obtained :-( Risk of further jeopardy by SPS North TAX problems What about 2012? → Test beam session on Saturday - DBD: Technological readiness Discussion started, more concrete results for Heidelberg
