Characterization

2 types of characterization

Direct Characterization Example: Because of your no-good-dirty-rotten-pig-stealing-great-great-grandfather.. Have students supply the definition. Definition: when author come out to give an adjective to the character Direct Characterization

Indirect Characterization Have students supply the definition. Definition: when author gives details to help reader infer character traits Indirect Characterization

FIVE different methods of indirect characterization: Note: We use the acronym “STEAL” to remember them. FIVE different methods of indirect characterization:

How a character talks to others Speech

The boys tiptoed downstairs with a plan they thought was foolproof to sneak out of the house. They didn’t feel the string that triggered the lights and booming music. There in the living room, posted in the gold wingback chair sat their father chewing on a toothpick. “Well boys,” he said, “Going somewhere? I don’t think so. You’re grounded.” Example of Speech

When a character thinks to him/herself Thoughts

The student slipped into the classroom building where Dr. D The student slipped into the classroom building where Dr. D. was lecturing. Dr. D stopped what she was saying and glared at him for a full twenty seconds. He quickly made his way down steps of the lecture hall and sunk into the first available seat. He sighed heavily as he ran his fingers through his sweaty hair and then hung his head and stared at the floor.   Infer thoughts of each of the characters Example of Thoughts

How other characters react to what this character does/says/etc. Effect on Others

Example of Effect on Others The student slipped into the classroom building where Dr. D. was lecturing. Dr. D stopped what she was saying and glared at him for a full twenty seconds. He quickly made his way down steps of the lecture hall and sunk into the first available seat. He sighed heavily as he ran his fingers through his sweaty hair and then hung his head and stared at the floor. Example of Effect on Others

What the character does. Actions

My father came home from work and stared at the television completely unaware of my mother’s presence. He sat through dinner saying very little to her. When she asked him a question, he would give one or two word answers. At night, they slept in separate bedrooms. Example of Actions

What the character looks like, whether it be clothes, stuff they own, face/body characteristics.

“A giant of a man was standing in the doorway “A giant of a man was standing in the doorway. His face was almost completely hidden by a long, shaggy mane of hair and a wild, tangled beard, but you could make out his eyes, glinting like black beetles under all the hair.” (HP&TSS p. 46) Example of Looks

Characterization in “Ponies” Barbara TheOtherGirls Speech - What does the character say? How does the character speak?   Thoughts - What is revealed through the character’s private thoughts and feelings? What actions do you find that imply the character’s thoughts? Effect on others - What is revealed through the character’s effect on other people? How do other characters feel or behave in reaction to the character? Actions - What does the character do? How does the character behave? Looks- What does the character look like? How does the character dress?

Princess Mononoke is directed by Hayao Miyazaki, who was the last bastion of old school animation, every cell is still hand drawn. (if I did the math right, that is 234,720 individual drawings to make this movie) Miyazaki is one of the most influential animators of all time, conveying deep themes while able to still generate a story accessible to adults and children. Characterization in Princess Mononoke Fill out the chart you picked up from the tray. You need 15/20 of the boxes with examples from the film. Please do at least three per character (column), and at least one for each element of characterization (row). I will stop the movie with 15 minutes to go, this worksheet should be done today, so fill it out as you are watching the movie. Movie link is here. Characterization in Princess Mononoke

Discuss how character’s actions can lead us what “into the wild” means Review stories for character’s actions. I can determine how characterization enhances theme. Agenda: 8/31-9/1

Today, we are going to see how the authors we have read create a symbol for the “wild” from the character’s actions within their stories and how that can lead us towards a theme. Into the Wild

Young Goodman Brown Theme of Young Goodman Brown: Actions of characters in Young Goodman Brown Symbol of the “Wild” Brown goes into the woods despite his “Faith” holding him back. Goody Cloyse, a seemingly faithful woman, also renders the fat from newborns. Deacon Gookin and the pastor are friends with the devil Brown rushes through the wood screaming like a crazy man wishing the devil to take his soul. Finally makes a decision to turn his back on evil. Dying at an old age, having lived a haunted life. The hypocrisy of being “moral” in a society Theme of Young Goodman Brown:

Ponies Theme Actions of characters in “Ponies” Symbol of the “Wild” Barbara cuts off wings and horn with little regret Barbara is ready to cut out Sunny’s voice Sunny dies at the end TheOtherGirls turn Barbara away because she doesn’t have a pony Ponies

It is hard in this film to determine, absolutely, who the good guys and bad guys are. Ashitaka, the main character is definitely good, but everyone else is a shade of gray with both good and bad qualities. So, we are going to look at how the characters’ actions in this film lead us to an understanding of the theme of the work as a whole. Princess Mononoke
