Princess Mononoke is directed by Hayao Miyazaki, who was the last bastion of old school animation, every cell is still hand drawn. (if I did the math right, that is 234,720 individual drawings to make this movie) Miyazaki is one of the most influential animators of all time, conveying deep themes while able to still generate a story accessible to adults and children. Today, we are going to see how the authors we have read create a symbol for the “wild” from the character’s actions within their stories and how that can lead us towards a theme. Into the Wild

Young Goodman Brown Theme of Young Goodman Brown: Actions of characters in Young Goodman Brown Symbol of the “Wild” Brown goes into the woods despite his “Faith” holding him back. Goody Cloyse, a seemingly faithful woman, also renders the fat from newborns. Deacon Gookin and the pastor are friends with the devil Brown rushes through the wood screaming like a crazy man wishing the devil to take his soul. Finally makes a decision to turn his back on evil. It is hard in this film to determine, absolutely, who the good guys and bad guys are. Ashitaka, the main character is definitely good, but everyone else is a shade of gray with both good and bad qualities. So, we are going to look at how the characters’ actions in this film lead us to an understanding of the theme of the work as a whole. Princess Mononoke
