Presentation transcript:

Interviewing and Giving a Killer Job Talk Paul Eastwick University of Texas at Austin

You’ve got the interview… Why interview? You vs. your record Show the breadth and depth of your expertise Demonstrate where you’re headed Collegiality Assessing fit Being a team-player I can see you’ve published things in good places, and maybe I even know your work already. Or, you can teach the classes we want, you get good teaching ratings, and you sound creative. You passed that bar.

What to Expect on the Interview One-on-one meetings with faculty Common research interests (read ahead!) Funding possibilities Understanding of the research landscape “Do you have questions for me?” (Hint: yes) Meetings with graduate students Common research interests Age difference Engage rather than impress Your questions matter – “little grants to leverage into big grants”

What to Expect on the Interview Meeting with a Dean (or Sidekick Dean) Teaching a class to undergrads Breakfasts, lunches, dinners, coffee, drinks You are still on an interview But you can have fun Follow their lead

Your Job Talk The structure Hourglass is more important than ever You are tackling an interesting and important issue… …in a theoretically compelling way You have thought deeply about it You are programmatic Watch the details – you are giving a talk to a whole department – what do they need to know? Many studies in one line, a handful on others You are creative but grounded in the literature You have (started to) solve the issue You have breadth You have a future Remember, this is interesting and important

Your Job Talk The style: You are not a lawyer or a politician You don’t have to know the answer, but you can engage with the question You are respectful of people’s time (45 mins) Know your audience (basic vs. applied) Can you reason through the question? They’re testing how you think – talk out loud. Can you think in a clear way about research? Can pull in some related work? Can you make theoretically grounded predictions?

Afterwards Thank yous Waiting…. If you get the offer, negotiate! Salary Summer salary Startup/space Teaching leave You met a bunch of new potential colleagues, even if you don’t get the job. It’s networking. It’s great experience.

Just a little research… Romantic judgments Mostly dyadic variance (Joe and Amy like each other; Eastwick & Hunt, 2014) Also job judgments? This candidate is amazing for this job Face-to-face contact and experience with a person increases dyadic variance. The same with job judgments? I don’t think anyone knows, but I think that’s intuitively why we do it.
