Vocabulary Culture- the shared attitude, knowledge, and behaviors of a group. Culture is the way of life of a group Ethnic Group- people that share languages,customs and common heritage Cultural Hearth- an area where culture originated and spread to other areas Diffusion- the spread of ideas, inventions, and patterns of behavior from one group to another Anthropologist- a scientist who studies culture Religion- an organized system of beliefs and practices, often centered on one or more gods Language- human communications, written, spoken, or signed
What Makes Up Culture? Elements- religion, language, clothing, foods, holidays, economy, housing, sports, entertainment, and government Examples- Mayans sacrificed humans to please their gods and that was a part of their culture Examples- In ancient India they fasted to please their gods Example- Egyptians mummified their dead so that they can have a good afterlife. Examples- Greece had a democracy Example- The Chinese created a language called Chinese
Cultural Hearth Cultural Hearth- the place where culture started and spread Example- Buddhism started in India Example-Rome took ideas from the Greeks Example- Israel was the birth place of Christianity
Cultural Diffusion Cultural Diffusion- the spread of ideas, inventions, and patterns of behavior from one group to another Examples- Mayan culture spread to other MesoAmerica civilization Example- Greece culture spread to Rome Example- Eskimos culture spread to Alaska
Culture Clashes When two cultures have different beliefs there is a culture clash Some cultures clash because they believe in different things. One may believe a god is real and the other disagrees. They also may not speak the same language, therefore making it difficult to communicate. Example-Hitler had a different culture than the other countries and the World War II started. Example- Russia and USA got in a disagreement about Germany and Russia told Cuba to point missiles at us.
Why Does Culture Matter? Culture matters because it is how you you live your life. If you believe in God, you go to church every Sunday. If you speak a different language, you may have to have a different classes in school. Culture is a big part of who you are as a person.
