WELCOME TO TURKEY… THE BRIDGE BETWEEN EUROPE AND ASIA

The Turks and The Ottoman Empire In the 10 th century, the Seljucks started migrating from their ancestral homeland towards the eastern regions of Anatolia, which eventually became the new homeland of Oguz Turkic tribes following the Battle of Manzikert (Malazgirt) in 1071 In 1453 Istanbul was conquered by the Ottoman Empire, which marked the end of the middle ages. Turkey has been the home of many civilizations. Ancient people who lived in the area include The Hittities of Hattusha, Phrygians and Lydians. The persians ruled between BC, followed by the Greeks ( BC), The Romans (30BC- 395 AD) and Byzantine Empire (395 AD-1453AD) HISTORY OF TURKEY

Republic of Turkey Turkey is a democratic, secular, unitary, constitutinal republic whose political system was established in 1923 under the leadership of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, following the fall of the Ottoman Empire after World War I. HISTORY OF TURKEY

Modern Turkey Since then, Turkey has become increasingly integrated with the West through membership in organizations Such as; NATO, OECD, Customs Union with EC and the G-20 major economies. Turkey began final membership negotiations with the European Union in 2005

ECONOMIC OUTLOOK Over the past decade, Turkey has enjoyed some of its highest economic growth rates in modern times, despite a slowdown in recent years. However, Turkey has suffered from four major recessions since 1994, highlighting the volatility of the country’s economy and the risks facing the economy. The growth of the manufacturing export sector has provided Turkey with a more solid economic base. However, Turkey’s growing service sector will continue to be exposed to external shocks. Turkey’s tourism sector is particularly vulnerable to political unrest and Europe’s economic performance. Turkey’s turn towards an export-based economy will benefit the country in the long-run, though the economy will remain somewhat unstable over the next three to five years due to the weakness of key European export markets. However, a fast-growing domestic market will help to shield Turkey from some of these external risks. Economic Summary:Economic Performance Comparisons: Per Capita GDP at PPP Avg.
