BW Performance Benchmark – Documentation (Note ) SAP Active Global Support – COE Technology, BW

© SAP 2008 / Page 2 Purpose of BW Benchmark Check General Idea The execution of planning functions (and most parts of query processing) cannot be distributed to several CPUs. Only the DataManager access can use several parallel work processes to distribute the workload. The single user performance is therefore dependant on the speed of the single CPU. The number of CPUs only becomes relevant if many users are working on the system in parallel (system sizing) or for DataManager accesses. The BW Benchmark Check helps you to find out whether the used hardware model / CPU type offers a good single user performance or whether there is potential to improve the performance by switching to faster CPU types. Some preparation steps need to be performed in advance of running the benchmark check. Result Calculation of performance key figures „Records per Second“ and „Cells per second“ Comparison of measured system against other systems used in BW landscapes (could by any type of hardware model from any manufacturer)

© SAP 2008 / Page 3 Technical Objects used (in BW Content 7.05) BW Objects Application 0SEM_BENCH Web Template: 0TPL_0IP_RC01_IPBM Workbook: “IP Benchmark Scenario” Queries: 0IP_RC01*, 0IP_A01*, 0IP_A02* Planning Functions: 0IP_A02* Filter: 0IP_A01_FIL_01, 0IP_A02_FIL* Variable 0I_IPBM_MARVAR1 InfoProvider: 0IP_RC01 (real-time InfoCube), 0IP_A01, 0IP_A02 (Aggregation Levels) InfoObjects: 0IPBM* ( See a complete list of the single objects in the slide notes) Other Objects ABAP report RSPLS_BENCHMARK_EXECUTE to run the BW Benchmark Check IP Performance Toolset (via transaction ST13) for evaluation of BW Benchmark

© SAP 2008 / Page 4 Activate BW Content 1. Install BW Content release 7.05 (released in July 2010) or higher. You can check in your system via „menu: System -> Status -> Component Version“ which BW Content release is installed. For details on installation procedure, check SAP Note (BI_CONT 7.05: Information about installation and upgrade) 2. Activate BW Objects for Benchmark from the BW Content in transaction RSA1. See slide notes for details.

© SAP 2008 / Page 5 Install latest version of IP Performance Toolset 3. Install ST-A/PI addon release 01M_BCO700 (SP1) or higher) You can check in your system via „menu: System -> Status -> Component Version“ which ST-A/PI release is installed. OR (as an alternative…) Install report ZBPPOIP in your system according to SAP Note The ST-A/PI is only updated twice per year. Therefore new features or fixes in the IP Performance Toolset are provided in a local Z-report that you simply create in your system. The most-recent coding is attached to the SAP Note.

© SAP 2008 / Page 6 Load Master Data 4. Load master data & hierarchy: Create Z report ZRSPLS_BENCHMARK_MASTER_DATA which is attached to SAP Note Execute the report to load master data and create the hierarchy for characteristic 0IPBM_REGIO.

© SAP 2008 / Page 7 Generate Transaction Data 5. Generate transaction data: In transaction SE38, execute report RSPLS_BENCHMARK_EXECUTE and select variant 2. You will see following selection screen: Press execute (F8) to start the report. A planning function will start that creates records in InfoCube 0IP_RC01. Please make sure that the InfoCube is set to „planning mode“ (RSA1 -> right click on InfoCube -> Change Real-time load behavior -> set „Rea- time data can be planned; data loading not allowed.“) before running this step.

© SAP 2008 / Page 8 Adjust OLAP Cache settings 6. Make sure the OLAP cache settings for plan buffer query 0IP_RC1 are set to the following settings (transaction RSRT – properties): Before running the benchmark check, press Generate Report -> „Optimize Report“ and then „Generate Report“

© SAP 2008 / Page 9 Activate BW Statistics 7. In transaction RSDDSTAT, activate the statistics for the following InfoProviders: - 0IP_RC01 - 0IP_A01 - 0IP_A02 On tabstrip „InfoProvider“, set the settings to Statistics on/off = X and OLAP Detail Level = 2 to turn on the statistic recording. To do that, highlight the lines for the InfoProviders, select Settings = X and 2 and press button „Replace Values“. Do not forget to press save afterwards.

© SAP 2008 / Page 10 Execute Benchmark Check 8. Execute report RSPLS_BENCHMARK_EXECUTE in transaction SE38 to execute a sequence of planning function and queries: a. Run planning functions using variant 3 of the report. In the subsequent overview screen, just press „Execute“ (F8) to start the planning functions. The expected runtime is around 2 hours. b. Run queries using variant 4 of the report. In the subsequent overview screen, just press „Execute“ (F8) to start the queries. The expected runtime is around 20 minutes.

© SAP 2008 / Page 11 Evaluate Benchmark Check 9. Execute IP Performance Toolset -> Benchmark Check -> Evaluate Benchmark Check. Select the user and time that you used for executing the benchmark check. Consider that the time refers to UTC time which is usually different from the system time. Press execute (F8) to display the results: The first line (This system) reflects the measurement of performance key figures in your system. You can compare it against average and best values.

© SAP 2008 / Page 12 Performance Key Figures Records per Second: the key figures reflects a data throughput for planning functions. The higher the number, the more records a planning function can process in a second. Formula: Records per second = (Records read + records changed + records new + records deleted + reference records) / (Gross runtime of planning functions – DataManager time) in seconds Average value: 6334 Top value: Cells per Second: the key figure reflects a data throughput for queries in the OLAP processor. The higher the number, the more cells the OLAP processor can handle in a second. Formula: Cells per second = Number of cells / OLAP time in seconds. Average value: Top value: 32378

© SAP 2008 / Page 13 Give Feedback to SAP Support To be able to collect many reference values for a good comparison, we would like to ask you to send the benchmark results to SAP Support. Please send the following information via to Customer name: e.g Customer number: Dummy Installation number: System ID: BWP Hardware manufacturer: HP Hardware model: Proliant BL35P CPU Type: AMD Opteron 250 CPU Frequency: 2400 MHz Cells per second:… Records per second: … We can provide you the latest references for „average value“ and „best value“ for an up- to-date comparison of your hardware to the „market“ on request.
