OUR SURVEY QUESTIONS… ▸ Do you like cats or dogs? ▸ Do you prefer poodles over chihuahuas? ▸ Do you like hairy or hairless cats?

THE EFFECTS OF A BIAS QUESTION ▸ The effect a bias question can have on your survey can really discern your results. Having a bias question leads the person you ask to a certain answer so you get the answer thats implied. Also the language you use in your question can effect the results to be bias towards one answer and not the other. For example if you ask “Do you think the government should spend more on the military to avoid a catastrophic invasion of the country?” is bias because it’s implying something bad will happen if you don’t, so you are more likely to say yes then if you were asked “Do you think the government should spend more on the military?”.

WHY WE USED A SAMPLE TO ANSWER OUR SURVEY ‣ We will begin to look at the most convenient classes in our vicinity that are able to participate. From there we will ask three questions to an even amount of males and females in the class. We will collect all the data and continue onto more classes. While we travel around to see who is closest and available we will ask people in the hallways we encounter to participate in our survey. This makes our technique for our survey a convenient one.

HOW WE WOULD CONDUCT A CONVENIENT SAMPLE ‣ In our project we are using convenient samples to collect our data. With this technique we will be required to go to classes closest to us and ask for a couple students to come out and answer a few questions for our survey. As well as open classrooms we will also ask students roaming the halls if they can participate making it quick and easy to collect our data.

HOW WE WOULD CONDUCT A STRATIFIED SAMPLE TO SURVEY OUR QUESTION ‣ If we were to use a Stratified Survey we would need to find four separate classes that contain grade 9’s, 10’s, 11’s and 12’s. From these classes we would pick a random five students from each class to participate and with this type of data we would see different results from each grade.

HOW WE WOULD CONDUCT A SYSTEMATIC SAMPLE TO SURVEY OUR QUESTION ‣ If we were to use a Systematic Survey to collect our data in our project we would collect class lists of the appropriate classes. With these lists we would come up with a way to select participants and one would be to pick every other male and female in the class.

HOW WE WOULD CONDUCT A VOLUNTARY SURVEY FOR OUR QUESTION ‣ If a voluntary survey were to be used we enter different classrooms and ask who would volunteer to participate in our survey. In around three classes we would enter we would use five male and female students willing to participate to find our data.

WHY OUR QUESTION IS BIAS ▸ During our survey the second question could be considered more bias because of the use of language we used and the way we asked the question. We asked “Do you prefer poodles over chihuahuas?” this question is bias because it can compel you to choose poodles over chihuahuas, it makes you compare a poodle to a chihuahua. If we worded the question differently it would be considered less bias. For example if we said Do you prefer poodles OR chihuahuas? It would make the people compare the two dogs in an objective way.

▸ The third question could also be considered bias because we asked “Do you like hairy or hairless cats?” this question can be considered bias because there are 73 feline cat breeds in the world and 6 of those 73 are hairless. Because of this most student at our school are probably not exposed to hairless cats so they cant really differentiate what cat they like better. If we asked do you like cats with long or short hair it would less bias.
