Welcome to Back-to-School Night Second Grade

Important Information School begins: 8:30 a.m. Breakfast is now available: $1.50 for full pay or 30¢ for reduced. Lunch: lunch will be bought using student’s lunch number. Please have your child practice their lunch number. Dismissal: 3:00 p.m. Early Outs: 12:30 p.m.

Enrichment Clusters Enrichment Clusters Video Interest-based groups of students who work together to produce a product, service, or performance based on their common interest. Groups meet at a predetermined time on a regular basis (once a week for an hour or so for each meeting). Group members may be different in ages and expertise, but work we together through a to accomplish our goals.

Words Their Way Sorting – organizing words into groups based on similarities in their patterns or meaning. Purpose of Word Study – It teaches students to examine words to discover the regularities, patterns, and conventions of the English language in order to read and spell. –It increases specific knowledge of words – the spelling and meaning of individual words. 3 Layers of word study –Alphabet – learning the relationship between letters and sounds –Pattern – learning specific groupings of letters and their sounds –Meaning – learning the meaning of groups of letters such as prefixes, suffixes, and roots. Vocabulary increases at this layer.

Dockets Each student will receive a docket; they are to be used daily. Important papers, homework, forms, planners, and finished work will be sent home in this docket. Please check dockets nightly and return them each day.

Homework Weekly homework packets are given on MONDAYS. Homework folders are to be turned in the following MONDAY. Please check your child’s homework agenda/weekly planner each day, and make sure that your child returns their homework ON MONDAY MORNING. Packets will include math, spelling, and reading. Late homework will not be counted unless: –You are on vacation and have excused your student online or in the office. –If your child is ill and have excused your student online or in the office. –If your family has had an emergency and have excused your student online or in the office.

Read-O Read-O are reading activities that will be sent home monthly. They will be used for extra credit.

Planner Handout It is very important to keep your planner in a safe place, as it will be graded daily for parent signature and reading minutes. Will come home on Monday and will need to be returned every day with a parent/guardian signature for 1point. The planner will also be used to keep track of behavior.

Student Expectations PEAKS –Prepared for learning –Excel every day –Act responsibly –Kindness for others –Silent transitions This system promotes positive behavior choices and promotes students to self-monitor their behavior. At the end of each day the student will mark their behavior in their weekly planner.

Behavior Management I will be using Power Chips to reward students for positive behavior. They can use these to earn rewards. This method will create a positive community in the classroom.

Carpool Students can only be picked up from the curbside. Students are not allowed to cross through the lanes without a parent. If you need to move forward have your child follow until you come to a complete stop.
