Creating a Story Map and a Character Map for Seedfolks Ms. Marshak English 10

Step 1: Read the story. Note important aspects of the story: Title Author Genre Setting Point of View Plot Characters Conflict/Complication(s) Resolution Theme(s) Social Injustices Author’s Style and Tone

2. Begin in the center and work your way out. This is a partner project. The center of your web should be the title and author of the book. The spokes of your web will be the other aspects of the story. Summarize each part succinctly. Even though you should try to be brief, DO be thorough.

TITLE AUTHOR THEME(S) CONFLICT/ COMPLICATIONS RESOLUTION SETTING GENRE CHARACTERS POINT OF VIEW PLOT (SHORT SUMMARY) SOCIAL INJUSTICES/ SOCIAL IMPACT AUTHOR’S TONE AND STYLE CREATING A STORY MAP

The Story of the Three Little Pigs English Folk Tale Do not take the easy way out or the first thing that comes along. Advance planning is its own reward. Beware false friends. Conflict: Pigs do not want to be eaten by wolf, but wolf is after them. Complications: Pig #1 & #2 are eaten. Pig #3 sets a trap for the wolf and kills him. “Once upon a time... “ Nature setting Folk/Fairy Tale Old Sow, Pig #1, Pig #2, Pig #3, Man with Straw, Man with Sticks, Man with Bricks, and Wolf Third Person Mother pig sends her children to live on their own. Pig #1 & #2 build weak houses and the wolf gets them. Pig #3 is smart and clever, so he outwits the wolf and lives. Social Impact: Teaches a moral lesson about good planning, wise decision making, and not trusting strangers. Playful style; humorous tone. Three Little Pigs STORY MAP

3. Use the character list from your STORY MAP to begin your CHARACTER MAP This is a partner project. Keep the same partner you had from the Story Map project. You and your partner will need to choose shapes and symbols to build your character map and represent the needed information on your map. You want to show: Title of book and author. Include a legend so that your audience can interpret your map. Include elements that allude to the setting. Include a short plot summary. Direct and Indirect relationships between characters. Indicate Dynamic characters versus Static characters. How the character is important to the story (what does he/she do to further the plot?) Other important elements the character(s) add to the story and any connections that can be made.
