Skeletal System Lower Extremities

Importance of This Lesson  Each bone in the human body is a unique organ that carries its own blood supply, nerves, and lymphatic vessels  However, when the bones are connected to each other, forming the framework of the body, it is called a skeleton.

Med Term Tip: Coccyx  Coccyx: comes from Greek Word for the cuckoo because the shape of these small bones extending off the sacrum resembles this bird’s bill.

Bones of the Pelvic Girdle  Illium (2)  Part of the hipbone  Ischium (2)  Part of the hipbone  Pubis (2)  Part of the hipbone

Coxal Bone Breakdown

Checking for Understanding  Break down the Coxal Bone

Bones of the Lower Extremity  Femur (2)  Upper leg bone: thigh bone

Bones of the Lower Extremity  Patella (2)  Knee cap

Checking for Understanding  What is fractured in this picture?

Bones of the Lower Extremity  Tibia(2)  Shin bone: thicker lower leg bone  Fibula(2)  Thinner, long bone in lateral side of lower leg

Checking for Understanding  Which Bone is this?

Bones of the Lower Extremities  Tarsals (14)  Ankle and heel bones  Metatarsals(10)  Forefoot bone  Phalanges (28)  Toe bones: 3 in each toe and 2 in each great toe

Checking for Understanding  What is the name of this bone?  How many bones are in this area?

Guided Practice  What is the Shin Bone; thicker lower leg bone?  How many of these bones are in the body?  Tibia 22

With a Partner  Illium  Ischium  Pubis  Femur  Patella  Tibia  Fibula  Tarsals  Metatarsals  Phalanges
