Status, gender and working conditions PhD Trine Rogg Korsvik, post doctor, Centre for gender research, University of Oslo

Workplace conditions  My work is a source of respect from others  My work provides me with a sense of life stability  My work requires physical endurance  My work gives me opportunities for self-development  I have an influence on decisions related to my work  My superior expects that I am available to work during my free time  My work causes that I spend little time with my family and friends  I have good relations with my immediate superior  I am exposed to unwanted sexual attention, comments or alike in my workplace  I am subjected to bullying (being ridiculed, humiliated etc.) by my colleagues or my superior in my workplace  In my workplace women/men are discriminated against  In a difficult situation I can count on trade union support

What is your position in the hierarchy of your workplace? MenWomenTotal I am on the bottom I am in the middle I work alone I am on the top Total Percent Numbers

Being very satisfied with the job

Conclusion  Almost all the respondents answer that their job is a source of respect and stability, and claim to be satisfied with their superior  However: a large group of men and women – especially women in lower positions – say that they have little influence and that their work isn’t a source of self-development.  The work demands a lot from a large number of women and men – it is physically demanding and requires sacrifices in terms of time for family, friends and leisure.  Around one in ten experience harms such as sexual harassment, bullying and discrimination at the workplace. These are actually criminal acts, according to Polish and European laws.  Still, almost 80% of the respondents claim that they overall are satisfied with their work. But there are significant differences between status groups.  The position in the work hierarchy is more important for women than for men.
