This is Peter Hatcher. Peter is 12 years old.

Peter lives in New York City.

Peter lives with his family. They live in an apartment.

Peter’s mom and dad take good care of his family.

Peter has a little brother. His name is Fudge. He is 5 years old.

Fudge is his nickname. His real name is Farley Drexel Hatcher. He doesn’t like his real name.

Peter has a little sister too. Her name is Tootsie. She is only 1 year old.

This is a story about Peter’s family where Fudge learns about money.

Chapter 1: The Miser

Fudge asks Peter how much money it would cost to buy New York City.

It would cost way too much money!

Fudge asks Peter’s friend Sheila, “How much money do you have?”

It is rude to ask other people how much money they have.

Sheila thinks Fudge is a miser. A miser is someone who doesn’t like to spend money.

Fudge does not want to share money. Sheila does not think Fudge appreciates all the things he has.

At dinner, Fudge asks his dad to pay him to pass the salt. That is not a nice thing to say.

At breakfast, Fudge starts talking about money again. He learns another word for dollars is “bucks”.

Fudge starts making his own money. He calls it “Fudge Bucks”.

Peter and his parents are worried about Fudge.

Chapter 2: Shoes and News

Peter, Fudge, Tootsie and Mom go to the shoe store.

Fudge wants to buy two or three pairs of shoes. Mom only wants him to buy one.

Fudge can’t decide. Everyone is impatient, even the salesman.

Mom tries to get Fudge to listen. She counts to 20 and pretends to leave. Fudge doesn’t listen.

Fudge tries to pay with Fudge Bucks. The store only accepts real money or credit cards.

Mom picks a pair for Fudge. Fudge is very upset.

Fudge throws a tantrum. Peter and Mom are embarrassed.

Peter’s best friend, Jimmy, also lives in the apartment building.

Jimmy and his dad are moving to another part of the city. Peter is very sad.

Chapter 3: Who’s Mixed Up?

A new family moves into the apartment building. They have a five year old girl named Melissa.

Fudge and Melissa are in the same class. Their “mixed group” class is for very smart kids.

Chapter 4: Richie Richest

Peter, Sheila, Fudge and Melissa walk to school. It is the first day of school.

Peter, Sheila and Jimmy start seventh grade. Jimmy still goes to Peter’s school.

Fudge makes a new best friend. His name is Richie Potter.

Fudge has a myna bird named Uncle Feather Myna birds can talk.

Today, Uncle Feather doesn’t feel like talking.

Richie brags about how rich his family is. Peter calls him “Richie Richest”

Chapter 5: Bye-Bye, Sue!

Peter went to visit Jimmy with his family. They took the subway.

Fudge lost his shoe on the train. Dad asked a cop for help.

Jimmy shows Peter around his new home. It’s very big!

Peter and Jimmy play sock hockey. The downstairs neighbor gets upset because of all the noise.

Mom buys Fudge a new pair of shoes.

Chapter 6: Mr. Money

Fudge is still obsessed with money. His parents are very worried.

The school counselor meets with Mom and Dad. They are embarrassed when she thinks they are poor.

Mom is afraid that she is not a good mother. Peter makes her feel better.

Chapter 7: The Green Stuff

Grandma suggests the family goes on vacation.

They travel to Washington D.C. They go by train.

Washington D.C. has the Bureau of Printing and Engraving. It’s where money is printed!

Fudge asked lots of questions. The tour guide was annoyed.

Someone on the tour explained that it was hard to make money… …but Fudge didn’t listen.

Chapter 8: Cousin Coincidence

The family went to the gift shop next. It did not go well.

Fudge wanted to buy everything. He got a tie with money pictures.

A man comes to talk to Dad. It’s his long-lost Cousin Howie from Hawaii.

Howie calls Dad “Tubbie”. It makes Dad angry.

Cousin Howie has a family: His wife, Eudora, their twin daughters and a son.

Their daughters are Flora and Fauna. They make a great team.

The little boy’s name is Farley Drexel. He has the same name as Fudge!

The girls want to give their brother a nickname. Peter suggests “Mini” for “Mini Fudge.”

Mini bites Fudge. Fudge is hurt. He screams.

Chapter 9: The Panda Poop Club

Cousin Howie is a forest ranger. He is upset that Dad broke his promise to become one too.

Dad writes commercials for TV. Howie is angry. He doesn’t like TV.

Howie invites Pete and Fudge to the zoo. They learn a lot about pandas.

Fudge holds and sniffs panda poop. Yuck! He gets a certificate from a park ranger.

Cousin Howie decides his family will stay at Peter’s house soon. Peter, Mom and Dad are very unhappy.

Chapter 10: Bird on Strike

Uncle Feather still isn’t talking. Everyone is worried.

Fudge says he talks every night… …but he lied! Fudge imitated Uncle Feather!

Fudge gave Uncle Feather a marble. He thinks he ate it.

The vet doesn’t think so. The Hatcher family asks for ideas.

All of their friends and family have ideas… …but none of them work.

Chapter 11: Baby Feet (Again)

Jimmy’s dad is an artist. He has an art show for his new paintings.

The paintings are special. Tootsie walked across the canvas!

Tootsie is the star of the show! Fudge is jealous.

The paintings are very expensive. Some people are buying the paintings.

Jimmy’s mom and dad got divorced. His mom lives far away now.

Jimmy’s dad has a new girlfriend. Jimmy feels confused.

Cousin Howie and family arrive in town.

Chapter 12: Camp Howie-Wowie

The cousins bring their sleeping bags into the house. They fall asleep right away!

Fudge is excited to have guests!

Peter is angry.

The twins want to visit Peter’s school. Peter says, “Absolutely not!”

Flora and Fauna visit anyways. Peter is embarrassed.

The girls perform in an assembly for the school. Peter stays in the nurse’s office.

Chapter 13: Do Not Pass Go

The sisters had a great show. Peter is not impressed.

The twins want to sleep over at Sheila’s. Howie is worried. Peter is excited!

Mini has to sleep in Fudge’s room. He finally speaks for himself.

Howie and Eudora finally watch TV for the first time. They love it!

Peter walks his dog, Turtle, in the rain. Turtle is not happy.

When Peter comes back the house is a mess. Uncle Feather got out of his cage!

Uncle Feather crashes into the window. He is very hurt.

They take him to the vet. Uncle Feather says his favorite phrase: “Bonjour, stupid.”

Uncle Feather did break his wing… But he can speak again!

Chapter 14: Dog Feet

Dad and Howie are proud of Peter and Fudge. They helped Uncle Feather!

Eudora cleaned the house and cooked dinner.

Mom comes home from work to lots of news. She is confused.

Jimmy and his dad come for a visit.

They give the Hatchers the first Baby Feet painting as a present! Mom and Dad are so happy.

Fudge tried to make paintings with Turtle’s feet.

Peter stays at Jimmy’s house. Jimmy’s dad is getting married.

Jimmy is the best man. Peter promises he’ll go.

The Howies decide to stay in town for another six weeks! Peter is very upset.

Chapter 15: Yelraf Rose

The Howies stay in a different room in the apartment building. Peter is very excited!

Fudge creates a code name for himself.

Fudge’s code name is Egduf Muriel. It is his name backwards and his grandmother’s name.

The elevator in the apartment becomes self-service.

Mr. Henry used to work in the elevator. He now shows the kids how to use it.

Fudge gives Mini a code name. His code name is Yelraf Rose.

The twins convince Howie to go trick or treating. Mini wants to go with Fudge.

Mini and Fudge dress up as misers.

Peter has to go too to watch Fudge and Melissa. He is a responsible brother.

Fudge and Mini get lost. They are trapped in the elevator!

The fire department rescues them. Everyone throws a party!

Chapter 16: You Never Know

Eudora is pregnant. She is going to have another baby soon.

Flora and Fauna want to stay in New York City. Everyone says no.

Fudge loses a tooth.

The Howies are moving to Florida. Maybe the Hatchers will visit someday.

Mini eats Fudge’s tooth. Fudge is very upset.

Fudge realizes that he was a lot like Mini. He feels bad for Peter.

Fudge writes a note to the tooth fairy.

Fudge finds a box of Peter’s old teeth. Peter leaves it under his pillow. Who knows what might happen?
