Then determine the overall diction of the piece. 3.What is the attitude of the speaker? Support your response with evidence from text. 4.Select two examples of literary device in the piece (besides imagery). For each, write the line, the literary device that is used, and reflect on its significance. 5.What overall theme from the play does this speech represent? Why? Support with evidence from your work in questions 1-4. (This overall question should be 4-5 sentences minimum).

Sample Essay What is the thesis statement of this essay? Where does the writer use quotes from the play? How do those quotes support the thesis? Where does the writer use examples from film? How do those examples support the thesis? Where does the writer use examples from literary analysis articles? How do those examples support the thesis?

Using Quotes Must be embedded with your own words – Right: When Hamlet declares “My thoughts be bloody or be nothing” the negative yet carnal connotation of “bloody” lets the audience see the shift in Hamlet’s mindset (IV.iv.35). – Wrong: “My thoughts be bloody or be nothing (IV.iv.35). This quote shows the negative yet carnal connotation of “bloody” and shows the shift in Hamlet’s mindset. Citation always comes at the end of the sentence Use a quote for a reason – Look at its use of literary device. How does the use of literary device support your thesis statement?

Using Film Refer to the film by the director Use it for a reason – Right: In the Kenneth Branagh version of Hamlet, Ophelia is seen in a straight jacket, bouncing against padded walls. Based on the costuming and acting, there is no doubt that she is mentally unstable, but the addition of the straight jacket carries the connotation of a woman held back by society. – Wrong: In Kenneth Branagh’s version of Hamlet, Ophelia clearly loses her mind. She talks about flowers and sings strange songs.
