Managing Time, Managing Self: Are you Putting Enough of Yourself into What’s Most Important To You? Council of Volunteer Administrators May 24, 2016 Terri Theisen, Theisen Consulting LLC

The First Word Time is the coin of your life. It is the only coin you have, and only you can determine how it will be spent. Be careful lest you let other people spend it for you. -Carl Sandburg

First, Some Facts American Time Use Survey (ATUS)

168 Hours In a Week hours dedicated to work & the commute to work 10 hours commuting to work & back 8 hours per night of sleep = 56 hours 57 hours LEFT!! What are we doing with those 57 hours?

Things Americans Spend Time On

American Time Use Study Facts We overestimate the amount of time we “work” each week. We confuse “activity” with “work output.” We don’t sleep enough hours. We spend 1.7 hours per day on personal , phone calls, gossip and social media that is not related to our work or personal priorities. We neglect our “core competencies.”

ATUS Data…. Americans average 30 hours of “leisure” time per week But it doesn’t feel like it because we don’t always use it wisely We don’t plan it

Approaching Time Differently What if we made different choices about those 57 hours? What if we became much more discerning about what we say “yes” to? What if we changed our own narrative?

Laura Vanderkam’s Rules for Leisure Time Choose activities that bring you happiness Create blocks in your schedule Commit Use the Principle of Alignment A small number – 2 not 10!

CONTROLLING YOUR CALENDAR Break things down to increments of one hour at a time – the way we actually live our lives. What actionable steps are required to get done what you want to accomplish? Then block the time in your calendar. What can you say “yes” or “no” to? What is optional and what is not optional? A key question to ask yourself: How do I get better at my professional craft so that I can have more time - overall – for the rest of my life?
