THE GUIDELINES REQUIREMENT  Recognizing that the synthesis, analysis, and physical properties of small molecules give an incomplete picture of the higher order interactions that occur in macromolecular, supramolecular, mesoscale, and nanoscale systems, the principles that govern these systems must be part of the curriculum required for certified graduates. This instruction must cover the preparation, characterization, and physical properties of such systems. At least two of the following four types of systems must be covered: synthetic polymers, biological macromolecules, supramolecular aggregates, meso- or nanoscale materials.  2015 Revision of Undergraduate Professional Education in Chemistry  ACS Guidelines and Evaluation Procedures for Bachelor’s Degree Programs

THE CURRENT DRAFT OF THE PERIODIC REPORT QUESTION(S)  How is the requirement for coverage of synthetic polymers, biological macromolecules, supramolecular aggregates and / or meso- or nanoscale systems (as described in Section 5.1 of the Guidelines) satisfied:  One or more stand-alone courses that are required for certification  Distributed coverage among courses courses required for certification  If one or more stand-alone courses are used:  List the course numbers and titles  Provide the course syllabi and exams for these classes

THE CURRENT DRAFT OF THE PERIODIC REPORT QUESTION(S)  If distributed coverage:  Identify which areas are covered in course work required for certification and report the approximate number of hours spent in lecture and lab on each topic to indicate how the coverage of two or more of the four systems constitutes the equivalent of one-fourth of a standard semester course  Provide specific examples of how the preparation, characterization and physical properties of these systems is covered in the courses and how student learning is assessed.

HOW DOES UNC’S PROGRAM MEET THE REQUIREMENTS FOR A DISTRIBUTED PROGRAM  The distribution requirements (synthetic polymers, biological macromolecules, supramolecular aggregates, meso- or nanoscale materials)  Synthetic polymers in the required analytical, organic and physical chem  Biological macromolecules in the required biochemistry  Nanoscale materials in the required inorganic and physical chem  The time requirement (the coverage of two or more of the four systems constitutes the equivalent of one-fourth of a standard semester course). For UNC, there are about 60 lectures and 14 laboratory period.  At least one semester of biochemistry plus a minimum of 5 lectures in organic, inorganic and physical chem lectures and 3 laboratory periods.
