Presentation transcript:

SCT Biomedical Pathway Project Lead The Way offers the only nationally recognizedbiomedical sciences curriculum. The PLTW biomedicalsciences curriculum consists of four courses takensequentially: Principles of the Biomedical Sciences (PBS),Human Body Systems (HBS), Medical Interventions (MI),and the capstone course in senior year, BiomedicalInnovations (BI).

During the Principles of Biomedical Sciences (PBS) course, students will explore concepts of biology and medicine to determine factors that led to the death of Anna Garcia. Students will examine autopsy reports, investigate medical history, explore medical treatments, basic biology, and learn research processes.

During the Human Body Systems (HBS) course, students will examine the interactions of human body systems as they explore: identity, power, movement, protection, and homeostasis of the human body.

During the Medical Interventions (MI) course, students explore biotechnology concepts and skills as they investigate how to prevent, diagnose, and treat disease. Explorations include: immunology, surgery, genetics, pharmacology, medical devices, and diagnostics. This course is articulated with Miramar College for 4 lab science credits: Bio 131 Human Biology and Biotechnology.

Biomedical Innovations (BI) is designed to test each student’s working knowledge of the biomedical world. Knowledge will be tested through the use of real world problems. These problems will reflect regional and global issues. Students will engage in professional internships according to their specific interests. A culminating lab coat ceremony celebrates their achievement.

In our pathway curriculum SCT students are trained to create their own websites and digital portfolios to showcase their work. Our course websites post assignments and resources and display student work. In the spring, SCT 9 th and 10 th Grade students will host a community Wellness Fair to showcase their linked learning team projects.

To conclude, research shows that PLTW students: outperform their peers in school, are better prepared for post-secondary studies, are more likely to consider careers as scientists, technology experts, engineers, mathematicians, healthcare providers, and researchers.

Fast Track at Mesa College and Mesa College Classes on Campus Students have the opportunity, starting sophomore year, to take Mesa College classes on campus. Course offerings include 2 college Math courses, Pyschology, Art 100, US History, English 101 … Mesa Fast Track: Our juniors and seniors attend Mesa College one period (either period 1 or 4) each semester. They may take a whole range of UC transferrable classes.
