MARYANNE MOONEY CEAV Yr 10 Subject Selections

Transition A CAREER is the sequence and variety of occupations (paid and unpaid) undertaken throughout a lifetime. More broadly, 'career ' includes life roles, leisure activities, learning and work. ‘Life, learning and work across the lifespan’.

Get the life you love! Choice ? Comfortable Lifestyle? Flexibility? Work and play Interesting? Entrepreneurial? Exciting with just enough risk? Stability? Travel? $$$$$$$ ?

Choices now – shape future options Dream! Consider: What subjects do I like? What subjects am I good at? What subjects do I need?

Easy Hard Choices

Easy Hard Consider options Discuss with teachers and parents Think about likes and dislikes Explore opportunities Aspire/dream Work hard Don’t care too much Choose subjects because mates are Ignore advice Believe the scaling myths Waste time Have an attitude Choices!

Mr Linear His process Yr 10 Work Experience Career exploration  Self awareness  Opportunity awareness  Decision making and planning Yr 11 subject choices Hard work Subject Selections

Mr Convoluted His process Yr 10 Work Experience – had a week off Thought career exploration activities a waste of time. Was late with forms so only got limited subject choice Cruised along Subject Selections

Mr Linear Mr Convoluted Got into the uni course of his choice Joined teams at uni (went to uni games!) Had part-time jobs Went on exchange Had a summer internship Got a great job! Left at the end of Yr 11 Apprenticeship in welding Left after 18 months Did nothing for awhile Thought he might join the navy - left after 1 year Did some labouring, travelled Might start a carpentry apprenticeship next year Will have trouble living on the apprenticeship wage! 6 years!

Boss took to London for 6 months – Olympic building project Gone to Western Australia to work in the mines! $$$$$$ Cruised through Yr 12 Cadetship – full time work/part time uni - lasted a year Back to Uni - Engineering, then business Dropped out and got a job! Decided wanted to be pilot Trained and maxed out the Fee HELP and CSP Worked for 18 months as a courier Gone to Central Australia flying tourists over Lake Eyre 6 years

It’s your career!

How do you choose? Know the procedures! VCE is a two year program English is the only core subject Maths is very important – check the level of maths required ATAR is calculated on 6 studies ONLY Consider a VET study VET is a VCE subject and contributes to the ATAR ATAR is used in Uni and TAFE selection at Year 12 Consider VCAL

Why is English so important? How employable are you? English is: Job applications Interviews Verbal communications Report writing Teamwork Customers Planning and organizing Life-long Learning

Subject selections How to choose? Select according to: Subject interest Subject skill/knowledge level Subject suitability – level of motivation, demonstrated capacity Prerequisite requirements

Maths Unit 1 & 2 – Yr 11 Chemistry Secondary teaching Primary teaching Early Childhood teaching Sport and Outdoor Education (Monash) Physical Education Valuation Medicine Biomedical Sc Pharmacy Prerequisites

Maths Methods Art and Design Engineering Some economics Medicine Biomedical Sc Some commerce/ business degrees Many courses need a portfolio/interview Both TAFE and Uni Sciences – often any two of: Physics, Chemistry, Biology Maths Methods etc Other Subjects

Apprenticeships and TAFE So you think you can just ‘ drop out ’ and get an apprentice ship?

Pathways

Planning for Opportunities Study -TAFE -University -Dual courses Extra learning -Languages, sports, music, vocations, short courses, Work -paid, unpaid, volunteer, home, school, community or parish

Be a career ally! How? Keep communication channels open Support and advice Allow your child to choose their subjects Maintain the relationship Avoid ‘hovering’. Parents
