Work Summary since the last meeting Hywel Owen School of Physics and Astronomy University of Manchester

May Summary (Some teaching and exams…) With Adina and Suliman, got some prelim results for LHC tracking – Black or elastic scattering only – Complete optics works ok (200 turns) – Impact parameter calculations make sense – Using black collimators for primaries, consistent results with SixTrack obtained this was the PAC paper Now looking at implementing nuclear scattering processes in MERLIN – Suliman has replicated the cross-section calculations in

Collimation results in MERLIN

Comparison with SixTrack SixTrack secondary MERLIN/SixTrack Primary

Scattering process simulation in SixTrack Two kinds of calculations – Averaged distributions, for high P processes Many interactions averaged to give expected distribution – single calculation done at the end of each collimator ‘slice’ Multiple Coulomb scattering Bethe-Bloch energy loss

Scattering process simulation in SixTrack Two kinds of calculations – Infrequent processes Point-like, few calculations in each ‘slice’ – Simulate by calculating total (macroscopic) cross-section and associated mean free path u is uniform random variate between 0 and 1 Particle n Particle n+1 Particle n+2 Typical scattering angle (e.g. 7 TeV in 1m Cu) is urad, so can ignore angles Mean free path (7 TeV in Cu) is about 6 cm, so typically 10 interactions Over many samples (and particles), the desired exponential distribution is obtained

May Summary Mo-99 production – Attended BNMS annual meeting – Had some useful chats with various companies, who will write letters of support for bid. – Submitted draft Mini-PIPSS proposal, been bounced from that, but am talking to STFC KE person tomorrow about funding – Did brief visit to Christie Hospital to learn about radiopharmaceuticals, but need to go back – Trying to sort out collaboration with TRIUMF/ORNL on target calculations

Other things ThorEA – Things moving quickly (Roger will summarise!) – Wrote half a draft of article for ‘Nuclear Future’ – Trying to get article into New Scientist – Writing another article on Thorium idea Attended EMMA commissioning workshop Did Uni training and teaching observation Attended FP7 (Health) bid information afternoon – I have the documentation if anyone is interested, but basically the opening in this is for PAMELA/therapy work Done draft PDRA job advert, just finalising it Confirmation of new MSc student on light sources, starting in October Organising the IOP PAB annual meeting: – Please come! 3 rd July at IOP in London – Summary talks on each main topic in accelerators in UK

Future Plans Seminar on Mo-99 at Manchester on Friday Submit adapted Mo-99 proposal Finish thorium articles Write LHC tracking routines Wedding 2 Wedding 1
