EU Referendum The week on , the British public goes to the polls in the first referendum on Europe for 41 years. How will the outcome affect my life? The answer is: hugely.

What is the EU? How will the EU Referendum on Thursday 26 th June affect my future?

Food, flights, Netflix: the EU and daily life Will a Remain or Leave vote lead to better entertainment, food and travel? The government said the average four-person holiday to Europe would cost £230 more after leaving the EU. Working together is better, say Remain campaigners. If Europeans want cheap holidays, good food and high-quality TV shows, they must make policies collectively. More than 400 professional footballers could lose the right to play in the UK after a Leave vote. Would Britons lose access to free emergency healthcare in other EU countries, quicker queues at passport control or cheaper phone bills abroad? That would largely depend on what the country was willing to accept in a deal after the vote. Leavers argue food quality is driven down, and prices up, by EU membership. The European Commission wants 20% of content on video-streaming sites to be EU-made; leavers say this will hinder the quality of entertainment on Netflix or Amazon Prime. Britons would benefit from the chance to make their own laws, maintain leavers.

Think, pair and share… List five questions about the impact of the EU vote on your daily life which you consider important (e.g. will it affect my phone bill?) Watch the following video clip: BBC EU young voters debate in 90 seconds

Stacked up…currently the pound is worth slightly more than the Euro… Both sides say they will make Britons wealthier. Who is more convincing? Leaving the EU would make each household £4,300 worse off each year but it would also save billions of pounds each year, create exciting new trading opportunities and make it easier for you to buy your first home. This is according to the rival camps in the UK’s referendum debate. Some have suggested the pound could fall by up to a third in value by the end of the year Some have also predicted sharp falls in house prices after a Leave vote Leave campaigners argue Britain would save the money it pays in EU membership fees this means freedom from EU rules, and new trading relationships will make you richer and give the government more to spend on services such as health and education. Remainers say leaving would put trade with Europe at risk and deter investment from further afield, making you and the government poorer. You Decide: Will you be better off if Britain votes to remain in the EU or leave it?

Hiring and Firing the EU Referendum and jobs. If you are considering your career options, or just want a Saturday job, which side should you support? The Remain campaign says 3m jobs are linked to trade within the EU’s single market. Leaving would trigger the flight of business to other countries and a recession would follow. Leavers say freedom from EU regulation would allow businesses to create jobs and the government could choose how much protection workers needed. Leave campaigners also say the free movement of people in the EU puts pressure on jobs, as employers can undercut wages. Remain say the rules encourage trade and bring in people who make Britain wealthier. You Decide… Will you have a better chance of getting a good job after a vote to remain in or leave the EU?
