An interactive science notebook (ISN) is your own personalized SCIENCE BOOK. A portfolio of your work in ONE spot that you bring EVERY DAY. It is a great resource for STUDYING. A great ORGANIZATIONAL tool that gives you permission to be COLORFUL and CREATIVE to show me what you have learned. Everything we do this year will be either glued or taped into your ISN, including graded papers. The only exception will be your Assessment Log/ISN Stamp of Approval Grade sheet. This will be kept in a paper sleeve protector in your 3-ring binder.

The purpose of the ISN is to train you to be a creative, independent, and reflective thinker and writer throughout the year. You will learn to process, express and apply the concepts and skills learned and used in this class. The ISN is included as a part of your final GRADE

Notebook Rules:  Your ISN should only be used for SCIENCE CLASS ONLY and comes to class EVERY. SINGLE. DAY!  Do NOT rip out pages or tear corners – keep it neat!  All entries to the ISN must be taped or glued in per teacher’s directions and will done during class time.  Please do not doodle or make unnecessary marks on pages unless it relates to a reflection (left side) page.  Each page should have a page # and date of entry. Assignments must be completed on the correct page!  Every page entry should also be recorded in the Table of Contents  Use color (ink, colored pencils, crayons) – it is a visual study tool! Color should be used in a meaningful way that will help organize and illustrate your notes. Don’t use markers to color – they bleed through the pages.  If you are absent – check with the teacher to see what you have missed. YOU are responsible for getting your make up work/notes.

This side is where the student reflects on what was learned from the teacher (seen on the right side page) and then reorganizes that info in creative formats that demonstrates their understanding in a creative and colorful way. This is the “reflection” page or output side. Even-numbered pages. This is where you make sense of the stuff you’ve been taught The ISN is divided into TWO parts: “Restricted” to your teacher’s input and teachings. Contains class/video notes, handouts, diagrams, graphic organizers, foldables, models, etc. This is the “input” side or info side. Odd-numbered pages. This is the what you get from your teacher – the stuff she teaches you.

-Title, description (in student’s own words), complete diagram, labels, and color are all used -Student included information that s/he observed and also included information about how there’s a change in energy from chemical to light. -All words are spelled correctly -It is neatly done. What is quality output??? First …. Let’s see what great quality output looks like. What makes this reflection page great output?

How about now? -Complete Diagram -No specific information -Has a written description with what the student observed -Some content vocabulary is used

Is this worse? Why? -Student used colored pencil – that’s o.k. -Student wrote one sentence to summarize -Not so good -Diagram is not completely labeled. -Misspelled content words

Lastly…see what ISN’T good output… Why would this be bad quality? -One word was used to describe the drawing -The drawing does not demonstrate any real understanding of the concept -Spelling was incorrect -Student used marker – not allowed -There isn’t a summary of what’s shown.

BASICALLY….  Include titles, page numbers, dates  Are COLORFUL (without using marker)  Are CREATIVE – think OUTSIDE of the box  Go ABOVE and BEYOND the bare minimum  Show me what you have learned – don’t just re-copy the notes! Good Quality Reflection Pages….

ISN CONTRACT The Interactive Science Notebook is a MAJOR tool for success in science class this year. Students will be working in their ISNs daily and will need to keep up with it at ALL times and bring it to class EVERY DAY. The ISN will serve as a part of the student’s grade in science and will act as a study guide and portfolio of their work. Students are responsible to keep their ISN organized, up to date, and neat. I have read and understand the above statement as it relates to the expectations regarding the Interactive Science Notebook.  Make sure  your name  ISN Volume 1 and  period # are written on the front cover  It is yours to decorate as you like  You are encouraged to be creative and personalize your notebook on your own time at home! Add pictures/words of your favorite things. You may draw them or use images you found online. Cover with packing tape to protect your personalization.

Step 1: Table of Contents leave blankstart with and so on…. Write “Table of Contents” – make 2 columns on the 1 st page Write “Pg. Left Side” “Pg. Right Side” Blank

On the very first page after the TOC, start with 1 in the TOP-right corner of the first page, follow with a 2 on the back of that page in the top-left CORNER and so on. Step 2: Number your pages…. EVENSODDS Left pages are always even Right pages are always odd

Step 4: Science Starters Class will begin each day with Science Starters… You will write the question and Your answer unless otherwise instructed Working from back to front, glue your SCIENCE STARTER worksheet in your ISN, starting with the last page. Trim the top and the bottom and sides so that the page will glue within the edges of your ISN
