Chapter 4 Pregnancy and Birth

During Pregnancy Eating well with healthy food is very important during pregnancy because eating fresh fruits are a rich source of vitamins and minerals. One of the most important things a woman should stay away from is alcohol, drugs, and smoking. These all can harm the mother and the baby. You also want to stay on top of appointments and make sure you get all the information from the doctor you need. Ask questions if you have ANY!

Prenatal Problems Genetic Disorders: passed down through family genes. Mother’s Age: teens mothers have a higher chance to develop high blood pressure then older mothers. Older mothers have a higher chance of around the age 35 of having healthier babies. Illness and Poor Health: when sick and pregnant her body may struggle to support both health or mother and developing of the baby. Sexually Transmitted Infections: mothers with HIV/AIDS are most likely to infect their babies if proper medical care is not used.

Stages of Prenatal Development First Trimester: begins at conception until the 12 th week. The umbilical cord develops between the embryo and the mothers uterine lining. Second Trimester: weeks. The child body starts to develop. Third Trimester: weeks. All organs are developed and functioning.

Birth Complications Preterm Birth: Babies come earlier than the due date us stated. Induced Labor: birth needs to start before the mothers body begins birth process. Breech Birth: when a baby does not “turn.” Oxygen Deprivation: the baby’s flow of oxygen is somehow is interrupted. Rh Factor: the type of protein in the red blood cells that does not match between the mother and the baby’s blood type.
