Overview Intro to the Boston Area Research Initiative The Boston Data Portal Future Enhancements

The Boston Area Research Initiative An interuniversity partnership that pursues urban research that advances both scholarship and policy. With a primary focus on the opportunities presented by novel digital data and technologies.  Faculty co-Directors Robert Sampson and Christopher Winship  Research Director Dan O’Brien  Faculty and policymakers representing ten area universities and fifteen government agencies.   Part of the MetroLab Network, a federally-sponsored national consortium of city-university partnerships.

The Boston Area Research Initiative Local policy should be driven by evidence-based decision making. Behavioral science should focus on individuals and the societies they create. These two goals converge in the study of the city. Big data provide a new set of resources that can be the centerpiece of this conversation.

The Boston Area Research Initiative: Main Activities 1. Pursuing core research-policy partnerships 2. Developing technologies that make emergent data sources accessible for research, policy, and practice 3. Convening and supporting cutting-edge research- policy work in the region

The Boston Data Portal Does everyone want raw data?  Publish maps of new indicators on BostonMap (i.e., WorldMap).

Advances to the Boston Data Portal Pt. I: GeoConnect GeoConnect enables users to map spatial files in Dataverse on WorldMap. Soon will be able to map tabular data with spatial references (e.g., census tract codes). Supported by an NSF grant.
