“A Butterfly Grows”

astonishing If something is astonishing, it amazes and surprises you.

astonishing Hurry believed that his garden was a place filled with astonishing things. I would find it astonishing to see a caterpillar turn into a butterfly. Which would astonish you- to see a caterpillar crawl or a caterpillar turn into a butterfly?

astonishing What might you find astonishing in a grocery store? What is something you might hear about that would astonish you? Tell about something that would not be astonishing.

continue If you continue to do something, you keep doing it.

continue The butterflies continue their journey south toward Sweetwater and on to Mexico. If I were hiking up a mountain, I’d continue until I reached the top. If you were swimming across a pool, would you continue until you reached the other side?

continue Would you continue watching a very exciting movie? Would you continue on a hike if the sun suddenly came out from behind a cloud? Would you continue to play if your mother asked you to set the table?

doubt If you doubt something, you do not believe it is true.

doubt When the butterfly suggests that Hurry might grow wings and fly away, Hurry says, “I doubt it”. I doubt that a butterfly could grow a shell like Hurry. What do you doubt a butterfly could do?

doubt If I told you that school was closed for a month, would you say, “I believe it” or “I doubt it”. Why? Would you doubt or believe a weather report that says it will rain tomorrow? Tell about something that you would NOT doubt if your best friend told you that it was true.

transform If you transform something, you totally change it.

transform Caterpillars transform themselves into butterflies. I read a story about how a frog could transform itself into a prince. Is it more likely that a caterpillar can transform itself into a butterfly or that a frog can transform itself into a prince?

transform I will name some things that might transform themselves. If you think this could happen, say transform. If not, say nothing. a worma booka fish a stack of papera seeda tadpole a flowera caterpillara table

examine If you examine something, you look at it closely.

examine The author had to examine many caterpillars to find out how they eat. I would find it interesting to examine how other insects grow and change. Which would you rather examine- a plain piece of paper or a butterfly?

examine I will name some things, and if you think you could examine it, point to your eyes. If not, do nothing. a colorful butterflya beautiful song watera large caterpillar a nice smella book an insecta movie

devour If you devour something, you eat it all up very quickly.

devour Caterpillars devour many leaves. When I am hungry, I devour everything on my plate. Which would you rather devour- spinach or an apple?

devour I will name some foods, and if you would devour them, say “yum, let’s devour it”. If not, say nothing. muffins pizzasteak onions peaschocolate cake broccoli sandwichcarrots ice cream turkeycorn

Let’s recap… and review what we learned.
