XFEL The European X-Ray Laser Project X-Ray Free-Electron Laser Dariusz Makowski, Technical University of Łódź LLRF review, DESY, 3 December 2007 The Importance of Intelligent Platform Management Controller in LLRF system

Dariusz Makowski, Technical University of Łódź LLRF review, DESY, 3 December 2007 XFEL The European X-Ray Laser Project X-Ray Free-Electron Laser 2 Summary Advanced Telecommunications Computing Architecture (ATCA) standard offers high reliability and availability because of build-in advanced diagnosis and monitoring system controlled by System Manager (SM) and Intelligent Platform Management Interface (IPMI). The purpose of the Shelf management system is to monitor, control, and assure proper operation of AdvancedTCA b oards and other Shelf components. The Shelf management system watches over the basic health of the system, reports anomalies, and takes corrective action when needed. The presentation discusses the role of IPMI standard in LLRF control system. The design of prototype ATCA carried board with Intelligent Platform Management Controller (IPMC) and AMC Module Management Controller (MMC) will be presented. The diagnosis proposed for LLRF system will be also included. An AMC module with gamma and neutron radiation sensors and FPGA configuration management system will be shown. Total presentation length: 11 slides

Dariusz Makowski, Technical University of Łódź LLRF review, DESY, 3 December 2007 XFEL The European X-Ray Laser Project X-Ray Free-Electron Laser 12 Diagnostics of ATCA-based systems Useful diagnostics offered by ATCA standard: 1. Thermal violation – IPMC controls temperature of ATCA and AMC components 2. Monitoring of supply voltages 3. Monitoring of supply currents 4. Monitoring of main power converter (-48V to +3V3/+12V) ‏ 5. Payload control (read of device state, reset and other user-dependent diagnostics) ‏ 6. External watch-dog for IPMC (with external oscillator independent from IPMC oscillator ‏ ) 7. SM periodically tests state of IPMC on ATCA boards 8. Electronic Keying (E-Keying) Additional diagnostics: 1. Monitoring of gamma and neutron radiation in ATCA crates and other important spots in accelerator tunnel 2. Reference clocks detectors

When allowed dose or fluence is violated alarm should be triggered (IPMI message). All measured data should be stored in main data base for further analysis

Dariusz Makowski, Technical University of Łódź LLRF review, DESY, 3 December 2007 XFEL The European X-Ray Laser Project X-Ray Free-Electron Laser 18 Electronic Keying Electronic Keying – the mechanism used to verify interface compatibillity in analogical way to mechanical connector keying solutions: Prevent mis-operation Verify fabric compatibility Requirements: The basis for the E-Keying process is the E-Keying entries present as FRU information in the Carrier and all Modules. Those E-Keying entries describe the Control Interface, and the Data Fabric Interface implemented by the Carrier and Modules. Independent of Electronic Keying (E-Keying), the receiver hardware must not be damaged during inadvertent interconnects of incompatible interfaces; therefore, the following requirements have to be followed. Figure 6-2 shows one mode of operation where two Modules are directly connected. The example shows the case where optional receive interface capacitors are used. The AdvancedMC point-to-point connectivity can be found in the Carrier and Module's FRU Information. The Carrier Point-to-Point Connectivity record is located in the Carrier's FRU Information. Those E-Keying entries describe the Fabric Interface implemented. It is the IPMC's responsibility to perform the ule Port E-Keying function. The AdvancedTCA Shelf Manager does not participate in the Module E-Keying
