Role Play Responding Negatively: Sorry, I’m not sure (where it is). Sorry, I don’t know (where it is). Sorry, I’m a stranger here/I’m not from here. Sorry, I’m new here too. Useful Expressions:

Role Play Giving Directions (1): Go straight ahead until you reach … Go along this road until you reach … It’s down this street, about two blocks/twenty meters. You go straight up/down this street and then … It’s next to the … It’s (just) on the left/right of the … It’s (just) opposite/across the … Useful Expressions:

Role Play Sample C: The sports center? Let’s see. Oh, yes. You go straight down this street to the corner. Turn left and go one block until you come to Campus Street. Go right on Campus Street. It’s on the right side of the street, just pass the swimming pool. There’s a sign on it. You can’t miss it. A: I see. Straight to the corner. Left and then right. C: That’s it. A: Ok, thanks a lot. C: You’re very welcome.

Language Tip You say “Excuse me.” when you want to get someone’s attention politely, especially when you are about to ask him/her a question. You can say “I wonder” if you want to be very polite when you are asking someone for direction. “Could” and “would” are more polite than “can” and “will” in asking for directions.

Discussion How much do you know about track and field? Tell your partner where track and field is usually held and what events are included in track and field meets. SAMPLE >>

Discussion Track and field are a group of running, walking, hurdling, jumping, and throwing events held between individuals or teams in arenas or stadiums. The running, walking, and hurdling competitions make up the track events, while the jumping and throwing contests comprise the field events. The arena usually contains a large grassy center known as an infield, which is encircled by a 400-meter oval track. At most track and field meets, several events occur at the same time. Sample
