Jouer, when used with sports and games, is followed by the preposition à. Je joue au basket. I play / I’m playing basketball. (à + le = au) Nous jouons aux cartes. We play / We’re playing cards. (à + les = aux)

Jouer, when used with musical instruments, is followed by the preposition de. Paul joue du piano. Paul plays/is playing the piano. (de + le = du) Karine et Michel jouent de la batterie. Karin and Michel play /are playing the drums.

When making questions with jouer, place à or de at the beginning of the sentence. À quels sports est-ce que tu joues? What sports do you play? De quel instrument musical jouez-vous? What musical instrument do you play?

Jouer un rôle means to play a role in a play or film. Johnny Depp joue le rôle de Capitain Sparrow dans Les pirates du Caraïbe. Johnny Depp plays the role of Captain Sparrow in Pirates of the Carribean.

The verb pratiquer is often used with sports. Est-ce que tu pratiques un sport? Do you play a sport? -Oui, je pratique le foot. Yes, I play soccer. When using pratiquer, include the definite article before the sport. On pratique le tennis. We play tennis.
