Stromal/Tumor Interactions and digital analysis Andrew H Beck, MD PhD Assistant Professor, Department of Pathology, HMS Director of Bioinformatics, Cancer Research Institute, BIDMC

Syllabus/Outline Introduction: Importance of the pathologist as a data integrator of information from the host and the tumor Current computational and molecular pathology strategies for dealing with complex solid-tumor specimens In situ approaches (e.g. computational pathology of H&E and biomarker-stained sections) Ex situ approaches (e.g. computational pathology plus laser capture microdissection) Presentation of tissue expansion and next generation, highly multiplexed in situ methods for evaluating epithelial-stromal interactions Concluding remarks

Carcinomas are composed of a complex mixture of epithelial and stromal elements. Most research has focused on carcinoma cells The role of carcinoma- associated stroma is not well understood. How to disentangle cellular complexity using digital pathology and machine learning?
