“Senior Assessment” Appointment with Counselor Appointments begin this week! Check bsd for your appt. time Some start tomorrow! Check today! Review credits for graduation Discuss post-high school options Set your calendar to Central Time Zone!

Schedule Changes Colleges frown on schedule changes If you make any changes to your schedule, you must notify colleges you have applied to Changes could effect admission decisions

Drivers Ed Requirement If you took Drivers Ed privately and have not brought in your drivers license to Counseling, please do so ASAP!

COLLEGE REP. VISITS 200+ college reps. visit BHS in the fall Schedule posted on BHS Website, Naviance, student announcements, GRC Visit with reps during your open periods –Often are the ones who view your app –Shows “demonstrated interest” Pass required if you need to go during a class period (orange pass by Mrs. Crowther’s desk)

Application Tips Organization is key (Map Book page 38) Apply Early! Entrance criteria gradually increases Scholarship money gradually decreases List classes on your application exactly as they appear on your transcript

Types of Applications Common App School Specific

ACTIVITIES RESUME Map Book - page 34 Grades 9 –12 activities only Provide brief description List activities in order of importance to you Academic recognition Sports participation Leadership experience Community service Employment Other extra-curricular activities

Personal Statement Map Book- page 39 Opportunity for a student to discuss anything they were not able to in their application –Explanation of why you selected that college –What brought you to selecting your major –Extenuating circumstances –Self Disclosure (off semester, IEP or 504) Tip: If you are able to cut and paste your personal statement, you were not specific enough

College Essays Map Book- page 39 Essays: Questions/prompts provided by colleges Essays are an opportunity for colleges to know who you are Write about yourself Tell a story, your story Highlight your strengths Tip: Make sure your essay answers the question or prompt being asked

Application Workshops Drop in days: September 6-8 Come during your free period Counseling Conference Room Jump start or answer questions about your application

Transcript

Transcript Map Book- page 41 Colleges will require some version of your transcript: Self-Reported Academic Record (SRAR) Common Application Schools School-Specific Application BHS transcripts will begin being processed on September 6th

Self Reported Academic Record (SRAR) Students input their course work and grades List classes and grades exactly as they appear on your transcript Colleges will request a final transcript Colleges will review your SRAR, be accurate!

Common Application Schools Over 560 Schools use the Common App These schools require a transcript, school report, and a counselor recommendation Tip Sheet available

Common Application Student At least 15 school days prior to deadline Assigns counselor Counselor will receive an Use barrington220.org (not bsd220.org) Counselor Sends transcript, school report and letter of recommendation

School Specific Applications All transcript requests must be requested through Parchment (with the exception of Common App) Request transcripts through Parchment at least 15 school days before the deadline

Parchment Student Accounts Credentials = transcript Add BHS to account Be sure to select Barrington, IL NOT Rhode Island See handout for instructions

Parchment Request Process Student will receive a confirmation indicating the request is waiting for approval Registrar will approve request and send transcript No need to counselor to approve your request

Requesting Teacher Recommendations Not all schools require teacher recommendations A copy of your activities resume Page 34 in Map Book Complete teacher request form Pages in Map Book Speak to them in person

Counselor Recommendation and School Forms Not all schools require school forms and/or Counselor recommendations Discuss with your counselor how to complete (if they are needed) Another good reason to attend your Senior Assessment appointment

Thank you note or Send a thank you note to the teacher(s) and counselor who have written a letter of recommendation

Parent Letter Map Book- page 35 Great Opportunity for parents Parents perspective of students for counselors Letter will only be viewed by your students counselor

TEST SCORES

How do colleges receive your test scores? Colleges will require students to send an official score report Request scores now! On-line through testing agency ACT = SAT = SAT Subject Tests

Note: Colleges will not review applications until ALL pieces are received

Financial Aid New FAFSA change: Prior Use tax information from 2 years prior 2015 Increase accuracy of information Receive award letter earlier
