2016- Commitment to Investment Policy Changes In May ’16, following a call from NUSU and Student Fossil Free Movement, Council members pledged to embed Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) considerations into the University’s investment strategy. Going forwards the University will procure only fund managers that are signed up the United Nations Principles for Responsible Investment (UNPRI). Preference will be given to investment managers who preferentially invest in progressive companies that are working towards low carbon solutions. 5

11 Best Environmental Initiative (Staff) - Highly Commended -6,500 out of the 10,000 items of furniture reused. -Worked with ‘Changing Lives’, St Oswalds and The British Heart Foundation. -St. Oswalds sold furniture to the value of £1,200 in only one day. -helped local charity Emmaus furnish 15 new flats for homeless residents. -Byker Under the Bridge charity organised a ‘Free Furniture Day’ for local residents in need of support. 16 Sustainable Estate Project- Highly Commended Kathryn Hall Outstanding contribution towards the University’s transition to the new ISO14001 Environmental Management System Standard whilst undertaking a student placement with the Sustainability Team.

17 Sustainable Estate Project - Highly Commended Herschel Learning Lab -Project team: Georgina Robson, Ross Henderson, Adam Hamilton, Thomas Price & Paul Nicholson. -Cool-phase low energy cooling and ventilation system -Low volume toilet flushing systems with non-concussive tap controls. -LED lighting and lighting controls. -Secondary window glazing with solar reflective and insulating window film applied.

Sustainable Estate Project - Winner 18 Newcastle University Flood Mitigation Project -Project managed by Louise Petrie. -On a secondment as Flood Risk Manager, Louise worked with researchers at the University and local stakeholders to develop a programme of work to mitigate against the impacts of future extreme weather events.
