Broilers operations The Key point in Breeder Management The Power of Innovation Dr. Drou Donciu Ph.D

The Power of Innovation

 Management has to be adjusted according with Genetic advances

The Power of Innovation Management General Instructions  Density  Hygene  House equipment  Vaccination Program  Ventilation system

The Power of Innovation Management Specific Instructions  Body weight growth  Feeding program  Quality of day old chicks

The Power of Innovation  Each commercial product is a result of breeding which start in the Pure Lines  Important is to transform the genetic potential in a better value in conditions of the market  Different types of broiler are distinct and can respond differently to the same management

The Power of Innovation  In actual broiler production -Egg production -Fertility -Hatchability are very fragile characteristics

The Power of Innovation Breeder Management  The breeder life is divided in 4 fases : -A / start = 0~4 weeks -B/development = 5~15 weeks -C/pre-lay = 16~25 weeks -D/production = 25~end  Each fase is characterized by different growth rate.  Each fase ask for a different used of nutrients.

The Power of Innovation  Investigate the problems will allow us not to repeat them

The Power of Innovation What we have to look for  Temperature in growing(low-high)  Beak trimming(bad or not uniform)  Light(infiltration, obscure areas)  Leg problems  Body weight variation  Feeding(Influence uniformity)

The Power of Innovation What we have to look for  Feeding(distribution, time use)  Weight feed used  Feeding program don’t give body gain consistent  Water access(nipples, space, etc.)  Vaccination program  Epizootology(area, time)

The Power of Innovation The potential problems in Growing The constancy in the results ELIMINATING IMPROVE

The Power of Innovation Factors to be taken in consideration when we feed the breeders in the beginning or during the production  EGG PRODUCTION The breeders need that the quality of feed to advance egg production

The Power of Innovation Factors to be taken in consideration when we feed the breeders in the beginning or during the production  UNIFORMITY AND THE RHYTHM OF EGG PRODUCTION The percent of uniformity needs to be taken in consideration in order to decide how fast we do the feed increase. The flocks that increase production 2~3% daily, need to be fed with the maximum quantity when reach 30%~45% The flocks that increase with only 1~1.5% daily, respond better when they Receive the maximum quantity at 60%.

The Power of Innovation Factors to be taken in consideration when we feed the breeders in the beginning or during the production  FEEDING TIME When a flock eats faster then normal, needs more feed. When the feeding time is delated, we feed too much. The time necessary can be influenced by : temperature, feed texture, etc.

The Power of Innovation Factors to be taken in consideration when we feed the breeders in the beginning or during the production  TEMPERATURE When the temperature in the house is around 20 ℃, for each 1 degree less is needed to increase the feed with the equivalent of 5Kcal/b/day.

The Power of Innovation Factors to be taken in consideration when we feed the breeders in the beginning or during the production  BODY WEIGHT More body weight, more of the feed intake is used for maintenance. For each 100gr. more on body, the bird needs 8Kcal/b/d. The lose or stationary body weight indicates no enough feed.

The Power of Innovation Factors which affect flock Uniformity  Day old pullet quality  Low environment and litter temperature especially first 4 weeks  Amount of starter feed and early feed restriction  Precision beak trimming  Stocking density

The Power of Innovation Factors which affect flock Uniformity  Sex separate rearing program  Coccidiosis and other intestinal problem (Capillaria, Ascaridia, etc.)  Feeding and nutrition  Light restriction program during the rearing period

The Power of Innovation Factors which affect flock Uniformity  Bacterial and fungal diseases and severe wing web vaccine reactions  Changes in feed formulas  Slow feeders  Ventilation not uniform

The Power of Innovation Physiological Development

The Power of Innovation Physiological Development

The Power of Innovation Management of Female and Males in 15~19 weeks  KEY POINTS Redraw target BW for the flock in under or overweight at 15 week Provide female feed increase to ensure correctly increase growth Achieve uniformity of BW and sexual maturity

The Power of Innovation Management of Female and Males in 15~19 weeks  KEY POINTS Ensure BW of flock follow target profile by increasing weekly incremental weight gain Change to pre-breeder feed at 18~19weeks Follow recommended lighting program

The Power of Innovation Management of Female and Males in 15~19 weeks  Exceed target BW in this period will cause Early onset of lay Increase egg size and double yolks Reduce HE yield Increase feed requirement through lay Reduce peak and total egg number Reduce fertility Increase more prolapse and mortality Difficulty control BW

The Power of Innovation Management of Female and Males in 15~19 weeks  Fall of BW in this period will cause Delayed onset of lay Poor initial egg size Reduced fertility Increase of broodiness hen Loss of uniformity

The Power of Innovation Management of Females 19 weeks to 5% production  KEY POINTS Light up on schedule Achieve target bodyweight by concentrating on correct weekly incremental gains Provide free access to clean, good quality water Monitor flock uniformity, BW and eating time and respond quickly Change from pre-breeder to breeder before first egg

The Power of Innovation Management of Female 5% production to peak  KEY POINTS Grow females to target BW profile Stimulate egg production by giving program feed and light increase Give peak-Feed at 45% HD of healthy correct bodyweight and good uniform flock(>85% Unif)

The Power of Innovation Management of Female 5% production to peak  KEY POINTS Increase feed each production 5%increase Monitoring Average BW uniformity and BW gain closely weekly Weight eggs and Record daily to peak Respond to inadequate or excess gains in egg weight, production and or BW by advance or delay feed increase

The Power of Innovation  Light stimulation is influenced by : Body weight Fleshing Sexual maturity

The Power of Innovation  Feed increases in line with : Body weight Daily egg weight Daily production level

The Power of Innovation  Maximum feed allowed : By 40% good uniform flocks 60% bad flocks, unifromity  If egg weight is below expectation, give 2 or 3 feed challenges at 10gr.each week  Before peak of production, weigh eggs twice/week

The Power of Innovation Broiler Breeder Male Management  Broiler Breeder management has become increasingly challenging in recent years as broiler growth improves and the relative level of feed and growth restriction versus full feed bird becomes more severe.  This combined with improvement in feed conversion, presents added problems with maintaining body weights, particularly during the production period as small increments of feed in excess of requirement results in rapid growth.

The Power of Innovation Broiler Breeder Male Management  There is also the trend to use high yield males, which complicates the situation.  The first task is to decide how we control male body weight in production as this will determine the servicing required for day-old chicks.

The Power of Innovation Broiler Breeder Male Management  Do not lose good males through poor management.!  At 15 weeks segregate the males that are not correctly fleshed and feed them accordingly.!  Successful mating requires : Good, strong, straight and even beak Healthy feet Strong legs.(min, vit deficiency)

The Power of Innovation Broiler Breeder Male Management  Males with short legs and small skeleto = useless.!  Adjust the males on adult type of feed before mix.!  From mixing till 36 weeks male body increase consistently, is very critical not to be over.!

The Power of Innovation Broiler Breeder Male Management  Sperm production and fertility is directly corelated with testicular size(att.after 12 weeks body).!  Transfer period is critical because males can fall apart as body weight get out of control and males become very aggressive.  The males body weight needs to be monitored preevently.!

The Power of Innovation Heat stress effects  Increase Mortality  Decrease Egg Production  Decrease amount of feed intake  Decrease egg size  Deteriorate egg shell quality  Increase the number of infertile eggs  Increase early embryo mortality  Deteriorate quality of Day old chicks  Increase the susceptibility against disease

The Power of Innovation How to minimize the effects of heat stress  Reduce the density per square meter by 10%  Increase the water space available by 20~25%  Use perches  Increase air movement  Feed the birds in the coolest periods of the day.

The Power of Innovation There is  A positive Relationship Between : Growing capacity and the age of the breeders  A Negative Relationship Between : Feed conversion at the progeny and the age of the breeders  A Positive Relationship Between : The egg size and the body weight of day old chicks  A Positive Relationship Between : Egg size and the final results (Is stronger when the breeders are younger)
