CAD, Class, and CAM James Shimek Exploring Technology you may or may not be aware of!

CAD: Computer Aided Design. Modeling (or even drawing) on a computer program CAM: Computer Aided Machining (or Manufacturing) CNC: computer numerically controlled – CNC milling machine – technically 3d printers and craft cutters are CNC tools too. Demystifying: Terminology

What could you do with 3d printing technology? Augment your own projects – many of the “classic” projects can be enhanced with 3d printers and cnc technology New projects that are only possible with 3d printers Create classroom materials

What could you do with this technology? Augment New project Classroom Materials

What you saw 3d Printer -Cube X Trio (price is falling~1800) CNC Router -Shopbot (7,500-9,000)

More apps! There are a lot of cool apps and programs that can take advantage of these types of technologies. 3d PrintingMakerware Cura ModelingTinkercad 123d sculpt+ 123d Catch thingiverse.com Cutting123d Make Inkscape Google Drawing Model CleanupAutodesk Print Studio OtherAlgodoo Phet simulations Construct 2 Game maker

Recommendations A good 3d printer doesn’t have to cost more than $2,000 There are many good 3d printers on the market for $600 or less Kit based printers can be even cheaper ($500 or less) – But you have to assemble them!

3d printer Recommendations Print r bot Play ●small print area, ●super basic ●durable $ 400 ●1x for light printing (not whole class projects) ●or you can buy multiple (but you will need multiple computers to run them!) Big Box 3d printer ●Very large, lots of bells and whistles ●stand alone printing $876-$1,000●One for the whole class ●Can operate without computer Makerfarm Prusa i3 ●large build area ●Super hackable ●cheap as it’s a kit ●need to assemble ●standalone 3d printing ●many bells and whistles $490-$650●One for the whole class ●Can operate without computer

3d printer Recommendations Makergear: Mosaic M2 ●Large print area ●Reliable ●Won “overall best printer of the year” ●good community ●a little pricy $ 1,800 ●One for the whole class ●Can operate without computer mono price mp select ●Small ●new and untested ●needs a better cooling system (print a replacement) ●Super cheap $230●needs multiple ●can operate without computer dremel / flash forge ●decent support ●large community ●reliable ●uses less user friendly software $890-$920●One for the whole class ●Can operate without computer

Recommendations CNC routers are generally used for woodshop type projects. The shopbot is a heavy duty hobbyist machine X-Carve ($1,250) Shapoko 3 ($1,100)

To be frank I wouldn’t recommend a cnc router to most teachers I would recommend a cutting machine Cricut Explorer ($200-$250) Silhouette Cameo ($270)

Craft Cutter Recommendations Cricuit Explorer ($200-$250) Silhouette Cameo ($200-$300)

Ideal CNC Equipment 3d printers Makergear M2, E3d Big Box, or Printrbot Play’s Laser Cutter Epilog mini 18 x 12 ($11,000)

Workflow (example: water rocket nozzle) Always begin your design on paper or some other easy medium – example: Napkin sketch Create your design digitally (CAD) – example: Tinkercad.com Send your files to the program for your machine (CAM) – example: Cura Use a CNC machine to help create your design – example: 3d Printer

Napkin sketch

Workflow (example: jurassic creature design ) Always begin your design on paper or some other easy medium – example: Napkin sketch Create your design digitally (CAD) – example: 123d Creature Use another CAD cad program to make it cuttable – 123d Make Send your files to the program for your machine (CAM) – example: Cricut Design Space Use a CNC machine to help create your design – example: Cricut Explorer

123d Creature

123d Make

Cut and Assemble

Example Workflow Exploring Electricity with LEDs) Explore what electricity is! Empathize: Kids identify what they would like out of a light (nightlight? flashlight? trinket?) Define: Kids write design statement (I’m going to create an item that will…..) Ideate: Online research (what have others done out there?) Prototype: 123d Circuits to design a light 3d print wire!

Thingiverse has a lot of premade models Some are too complicated and need a lot of supplies, some are super easy Instructables is a good choice too You are not a toy store

Instructables Also a good source for project ideas – (that batman logo is made from cardboard, black spray paint, and cheap LED strips)

123d circuits Very easy and powerful circuit designer Have kids test their circuits and show you before they begin actually using up components and burning things out!

Tinkercad to cut up objects and 3d Print in Clear or Glow Hollow out insides of objects to hide LED’s and batteries “Clear” plastic will let light through You can always paint everything else later!

3d Print and Wire Try to use lead free solder Hot glue after you solder

Questions etc Feel free to me Engineering and Technology Teacher Harper Jr. High, Davis CA
