Platform and Literature
People remember 50% of what they see and hear and only 10% of what they read. So why bother making Literature? - The quote above is a lie! - Some people grasp information better visually than orally - Provides a creative visual to complement what you're saying - Allows you to show what you can't express verbally - Gives something for delegates to remember you by when voting
A picture is worth a thousand words. - Can you summarize how much you love Key Club and why you think you're fit to be Lieutenant Governor...in less than five minutes? - Didn't think so. - Literature provides subjective insight into the candidate's personality - Don't rush and speak quickly, instead put things into your literature that you don't have time to talk about.
A word is worth 1/1000 of a picture! - Although visuals are nice, a good idea is to include... - Name and Contact information (phone, e-mail, etc) - Endorsement (does your home club support you?) - Platform - Key Club credentials (what makes you qualified?) - A quote (like the cool one below!) - A short biography (your life has to be interesting)
Rules were made to be broken...NOT! - Make sure to pay close attention to the following guidelines: - Only one piece of literature is allowed - The one piece of literature may be defined by: - One 8.5x11 inch page double sided - Two 8.5x11 inch single sided pages - Additional material may NOT be glued or attached on - Feel free to use color or black and white
Get it out there! - All literature MUST BE emailed to your LTG at least ONE WEEK prior to the conclave - Failure to do so may result in the division not receiving your candidacy information - All candidate literature will then be distributed to the division by the LTG. - Methods may include posting them onto the divisional reflector, email, and/or onto the CNH CyberKey.
Campaigner's block? Don't worry! - A good idea is to start by setting up a platform. - A platform should outline your goals. - If you had to sum everything you are up into one thing, that's your platform! - Focus on your division and what you can do for it - Don't forget to mention why you want to be Lieutenant Governor, not just what you'll do if you win.
Focus on the details - Although it's great to have a big picture, the details are what make it all worthwhile - Reflect on your division's current performance, its performance in the past, and what you plan to do for the future - Be both realistic and optimistic - Don't forget that your platform reflects who YOU are - Keep in mind, the Lieutenant Governor manages an entire DIVISION, not just one club
E.L.E.G.A.N.T! - Everyone Loves Efficient, Good Acronyms ← Nice Try! - An acronym is a good example of a platform, but don't waste hours thinking of an acronym, sometimes they just don't work - Mascots, motivational phrases, or big words all work great! - Be general, then go in-depth at your Conclave. This way, your platform can function as an outline for your speech - Please, be appropriate and professional. Things that seem funny at the time will not seem funny later on
Here's an example (you can't use this!) P – Promoting healthy living O – Organizing divisional fundraisers for DCON K – Keeping in close contact with Kiwanis E – Elevating funds raised for PTP M – Making care packages for soldiers O – Open doors for the disadvantaged N – Navigating our division to a successful future!
