Redemption

1. Forgiveness and Regeneration A. John 3:16 B. Regeneration brings fruit 1. 1 John 2: John 3: John 4: John 5: John 5:18 6. Gal. 5:22-23 Do you think it is possible for a person to be regenerated and then stagnate spiritually so that there is little or no growth? What circumstances might a person live in that would lead to such spiritual stagnation and lack of growth?

2. Justification Justification is an instantaneous legal act of God in which he (1) thinks of our sins as forgiven and Christ’s righteousness as belonging to us, and (2) declares us to be righteous in his sight. A. Justification includes a legal declaration by God God declares us righteous – Rom. 3:20, 26, 28 B. God declares us to be just in his sight Rom. 8:33-34 C. God imputes Christ’s righteousness to us Rom. 4:1-3; Some people think that when things go wrong in their life God is still continuing to punish them for sins they have done. Is this an accurate understanding of how God works? Why or why not?

3. Sanctification Sanctification is a progressive work of God and man that makes us more and more free from sin and like Christ in our actual lives. A. Three stages of sanctification 1. Begins at regeneration – 1 Cor. 6:11 2. Lasts throughout our lifetime – 2 Cor. 3:18 3. Will not be completed in this life – Matt. 6:11-12 B. God and humans cooperate in sanctification 1. God’s role – Heb. 12:4-11 (receive) 2. Our role – Rom 8:13 (yield and strive) Have you experienced God work in your life in this way?
