Grace Baptist Church April 27, 2014 Romans Series #17

Where are we in the outline of Romans?  Salutation  Sentence - Condemnation 1-3:20  Salvation - Justification 3:21- ch. 5  Sanctification – Growing and changing by the Holy Spirit thru God’s Word 6-8  Sovereignty – God’s plan 9-11  Service – Practical living  Sayonara – Conclusion 15-16

Justification with Sanctification  In Justification I am declared righteous. This is a transaction Divine life has been given to me  In Sanctification I am experiencing developed righteousness This is a transformation process Divine living is occurring

A Christian is …  One who has been justified and as a result is undergoing a process called sanctification which is: A work of the Holy Spirit of God By means of the Word of God Making us more like the Son of God Setting us apart for the glory of God Changing our lives through growth in Him

The THREE Chapters of Sanctification  Chapter 6 The Basis of Sanctification  Chapter 7 The Blight on Sanctification  Chapter 8 The Bliss of Sanctification

I. The Question Is Pointed and Revealing 6:1  “What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound?”  The two extremes The Legalists who mocked the doctrine of grace by adding requirements of good works. Acts 15:5 The Libertarians who misunderstood grace as a license to live in sin. Jude 4

 There is a connection between justification and sanctification It is the New Life and the living of that life. Redemption produces holiness. Goodness is part of the fruit of the Spirit. Justification cannot exist apart from sanctification. Can a Child of God live as a child of Satan? ○ Many people say YES, but what does Paul say?

II. The Answer Is Loud and Clear 6:2  “Certainly not! How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it?”  A repulsive thought – No way Sin cannot glorify God because of “grace.” Living in sin is out of the question. ○ There has been a death Complete opposite of life A one-time occurrence A permanent situation The dead are not living and the living are not dead ○ I John 3:9 – should not/cannot continually… ○ Salvation is justification plus sanctification ○ This is not sinlessness ○ But it is separation from the controlling power of sin.

III. The Argument Is Simple and Direct 6:3-14  Know (vs. 3-10) Centered In the Mind Know the Facts (3-5) ○ The Illustration of Baptism ○ His and our death, burial, and resurrection Know the Application (6-10) ○ The Illustration of Slavery ○ Sin wants to be our master (but made inactive, loosed from, change in relationship) Know the Guarantee (9-10) ○ Any promising statements here?!

 Reckon (vs. 11,12) Centered In the Heart “Put it to your account” ○ Chapter 4 – “count” “impute” “reckon” The believer is not asked to feel it or to even totally understand it, but to believe that what God says is true - is true in your life! God does not command us to become dead to sin. He tells us that we are dead to sin and alive unto God, AND THEN commands us to act upon it. Even if we do not… the facts are still true.” Wiersbe p.66.

 Yield (vs ) Centered In the Will “To place at one’s disposal” “to present” “to offer as a sacrifice” Romans 12:1,2 As Tools – vs. 13 As Servants – vs. 16 As Fruit – vs. 19 The question, the answer, the argument. Saved and in the process of sanctification! Throughout this process – a struggle leading to victory (Romans 7) I am to: Know, reckon, yield. This is a matter of life and death. Ephesians 2:1-9
