About the IPWG The International Precipitation Working Group was initiated in 2000 after the 52nd session of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Executive Council recommended involving relevant science groups in a systematic manner to improve satellite system utilization. Such a group was then also endorsed by Coordination Group for Meteorological Satellites (CGMS). IPWG is interested quantitative precipitation measurements in both research and operational aspects. Its endeavor is to foster the development of better rain and snow measurements; the improvement of scientific understanding of the related processes; and the development of international partnerships. The 8 th Workshop in Bologna, Italy. After more than 15 years of activity and at the time of the consolidation of the Global Precipitation Mission constellation the 8 th workshop is organized in Bologna following previous workshops in Madrid (2002), Monterey (2004), Melbourne (2006), Beijing (2008), Hamburg (2010), São José dos Campos (2012) and Tsukuba (2014). jointly with the 5 th ISSWM meeting Workshop Format Plenary and poster sessions will be organized by the IPWG and ISSWM program committees based on the submitted contributions. These sessions of presentations will be followed by working group sessions on Research Activities, Operational Applications, Validation, and New Technology, where participants will help formulate recommendations and future activities. In parallel to the workshop, a satellite data training event is planned. The separate training activity will focus on new and emerging satellite technologies, sensors, and precipitation datasets. Hotel information can be found here: To be completed First circular for the joint 8th IPWG meeting and the Fifth International Workshop on Space–based Snowfall Measurement Abstract submission for IPWG Abstracts that deal with current operational and research precipitation estimation techniques, applications to climate and weather, data assimilation, validation, sensor calibration, and future satellite missions are encouraged. The abstract should be in English, approximately one half of an A4 page and provided in electronic form (details provided on the IPWG web page). Registration forms can be submitted by to the co-chairs Tuka Dinku and Rémy Roca.
