Unit V: Notes #6 US Enters War World History

I. Why did US enter WWI on the side of the Allies? -similar heritage & culture -Britain/France were democracies; Germany/Austria were absolute monarchies -Pres. Wilson wanted to “make world safe for democracy.” -US was “neutral” during beg. Of war, but secretly favored Allies (sent weapons to British and French)

II. What sparked the US confrontation? -Germans sank Lusitania, a British passenger liner (128 Americans killed) -Unrestricted U-boat warfare also sank USS Illinois -Zimmerman Note: German diplomat offer Mexican govt. a deal: If war broke out: -Mexico would help Germany -Germany would help Mexico regain Southwest US

-Britain intercepted the note, gave it to US, -April 1917, US declares war on Germany -Timing ends up being very important, due to Russian Rev. and their eventual withdrawal from war -Troops join the Western Front in the Summer of 1918

Do Now: 2/1/16  Using your MANIA notes and experiences during the Alliance Game, construct a Five Sentence Essay explaining the causes of WWI.  When you are constructing the paragraph, consider how you will write your Exit Exam essay next week.  Use an Introduction Sentence that gives your three reasons. Give an example for each reason (your paragraph/essay body), and a conclusion. In your conclusion you can restate what you have said, or insert a final opinion.
