INTRO TO UNINTENTIONAL INJURIES

Target: I will be able to describe rules and laws intended to prevent injuries Pg. 15 Unintentional Injury: injuries which occur without planning or intention to harm For Americans ages 1-44, unintentional injuries are the leading cause of death More than 90,000 people die and 31 million go to the emergency room annually

Common Causes of Unintentional Injuries: Swimming Fire Arms Work Place Conditions Motor Vehicle Accidents Most common cause of unintentional deaths Cycling Incidents- Accounts for more than 500,000 ER visits every year Most fatal collisions are caused by cyclists’ errors- usually failure to yield at intersections

Guideline and Laws for Prevention of Unintentional Injuries: Seat Belt Laws Oregon requires all adult drivers and passengers to wear a seat belt at all times while the vehicle is in motion Click It or Ticket”- Oregon fines are $130 for the 1 st offense.

“Children over 40 pounds must use boosters to 4'9" tall or age 8 and the adult belt fits correctly.

Headlight Laws- Oregon state law requires you to have your headlights turned on from sunset to sunrise and any time visibility is reduced to less than 1,000 feet. Bike Lanes and traffic lights

Helmet Requirements- Regardless of age, anyone riding on a motorcycle must wear a helmet If you're under 16 years old, you must wear a helmet when riding a bicycle. Drinking laws - intoxication limits for drivers: Under 21 (0.00%- zero tolerance, %)

Cell phone use bans- All drivers are banned from using hand-held phones. All drivers under 18 years old are banned from all "mobile communication" while driving. Texting is banned for all drivers, regardless of age, while behind the wheel.

Teenager Curfews Minors under14 years and not in high school: curfew is between 9:15 p.m. and 6 a.m. on school days (10:15 pm on Fri and Sat) Minors 14 and older in high school: curfew is between 10:15 p.m. and 6 a.m. (12 midnight on Fri and Sat) Summary
