Chapter 11: 3D Media & Process The oldest and most enduring of all the arts is sculpture. Two basic approaches – Subtractive: material is removed from an original block, as in carving. Additive: the form is built up by adding material to the form, such as clay. Carving Modeling Casting Assemblage Earthworks

Sculpture Chapter 11 concerns itself with three-dimensional objects and the space they occupy. Central to this study is th eoldest and most enduring of all the arts – sculpture. All the sculpture we consider in this chapter are either one of two basic approaches – subtractive, where material is removed from an original block, as in carving; or additive, where the form is built up by adding material to the form, such as clay. Casting (or replacement process) is a separate process unto its own; and earthworks are often a result of both additive and subtractive processes.

Low vs. High Relief Sculptures The Greeks perfected relief sculpture, which is intended to be seen from one side only. Relief sculptures were often used on Greek buildings, particularly as friezes (decorative bands) or on the pediments (triangular gables) of their temples. Forms and figures carved in relief are done in either low (bas-) relief or high (haut-) relief. Palette of King Narmar ( B.C.E.) is an example of low- relief. The figures project out very little from their background. By contrast, Atlas ( B.C.E.) from the Temple of Zeus is an example of high relief – the figures project out more than half their circumference. The Parthenon frieze exhibits much greater naturalism than Atlas, and even though the work is low-relief, the space seems deeper because the figures are shown in three-quarter view.

Sculptures Perhaps because the human figure has always been a chief subject for sculpture, movement is one of the defining characteristic of the medium. Sculpture in-the-round literally demands movement. We must walk around it in order to see the form in its entirely. From different points of view, David Smith’s Blackburn: Song of an Irish Blacksmith ( ) seems like two different works of art. By experiencing sculpture from many vantage points, one can begin to understand the analogy of the “kinetic medium,” the work takes on more meaning as one moves about it.

Sculptural Technique 1: Carving Caring is a subtractive process. In carving, material such as stone or wood is removed or subtracted from a block of raw material in order to reveal the form inside. Michelangelo wrote, “The best artist has no concept which some single marble does not enclose within its mass.” Carving is a difficult process and even Michelangelo would occasionally give up. The unfinished Atlas (1513 – 20) allows us to see the “subtractive” process as if it were still in progress.

Patrocinio Barela, Nativity (Jupiter wood, 1966) Nativity is carved out of Juniper, and the forms are dependent upon the original shape of the wood itself. The lines of his figures follow the natural contours of the wood and its grain. The images of saints, carved from local juniper wood by Barela, attempt to tie the local world into the universal realm of religion.

This desire to unify the material world and the spiritual world has been a goal of sculpture from the earliest time. Larger than life Egyptian funerary statues were intended to bear the ka, or principal soul of the deceased. The permanence of the stone was thought to insure eternal life. For the Greeks, what tied th eworld of the gods to humanity was beauty itself, and a premier example of this was the perfectly proportional male body. While Greek sculpture is indebted to Egyptian sculpture, the Greeks quickly progressed to a much more naturalistic style. Artist unknown, Mycerinus and His Queen ( BCE)

Compared to the Egyptian Mycerinus and His Queen ( BCE), the Greek Kouros (Kritios Boy) is much less rigid and more lifelike. The weight of his body is centered on his left leg, a principle called ponderation or “weight shift.” The resulting sense of movement was further developed by Praxiteles who created the even more dynamic Hermes and Dionysos. The weight shift is more extreme, and results in a sort of S-curve that runs through the spine. Known as contrapposto, meaning “counterbalance,” this pose became highly favored by sculptors during the Renaissance.

Artist Unknown, Three Goddesses at the Parthenon, Acropolis, Athens (marble, BCE) The crowning achievement of naturalistic effect is perhaps greatest in the Three Goddesses, originally from the east pediment of the Parthenon. The drapery is so masterfully carved that it brings to life the human gestures beneath.

Sculptural Technique 2: Modeling The manipulation of clay by hand – pinching, bending, kneading, rolling and shaping, are the basic gestures of modeling. Clay, a natural material found worldwide, has been used by artist to make everyhing from pots to sculptures since the earliest times. The creating of objects from clay that are then “fired” (usually between 1200 and 2700 degrees Fahrenheit), are called ceramics. Robert Arneson’s Case of Bottles (1964) is a ceramic sculpture.

Historically, the Chinese have excelled at ceramics, particularly porcelain of fine white clay – hence, we call our best dinnerware “China.” The most masterful disply of Chinese ceramic art, however, was discovered in 1974 when the tomb of Shin Huang Ti was uncovered accidentally. Shih was buried with over six thousand life-size ceramic figures of soldiers and horses (221 – 206 BCE), serving as immortal body guards for the emperor.

Sculptural Technique 3: Casting Casting is an invention of the Bronze Age (beginning approximately 2500 B.C.E.), where it was first used to make utensils by pouring liquid bronze into open0faced molds (very much like gelatin molds). The Greek Girl Running (500 BCE) is an example of a bronze sculpture made by pouring bronze into a mold made from an original.

In the Kingdom of Benin, in Nigeria, brass casting reached an extraordinary level of sophistication by the 14 th century. The Head of an Oba (18 th C.) is an example of the intricate detail that is possible in one of the most enduring casting processes – lost-wax, or cire-perdue which was perfected by the Greeks.

The Greek Girl Running is solid cast. This is fine for small works, but the weight and cost of the bronze make hollow rather than solid casting essential. The Greeks perfected hollow casting by the 5 th century B.C.E. text images depicting the basic process are from the Encyclopedia of Trades and Industries, published in the 18 th century by Denis Didorot,. A brief description follows: 1) The sculpture is first modeled from a pliable material such as clay, wax or plaster. 2) A mold is then made of the original, either in plaster or in a soft get-like material such as synthetic rubber. When it is removed, a negative impression (mold) of the original is revealed.

3) Wax is then poured or brushed into the negative mold to the desired thickness of the bronze. 4) The space inside this hollow lining is filled with investment, a combination of water, plaster and ground-up pottery. 5) The outer mold is now removed, and rods of wax are attached to the wax, sticking out from it like giant hairs. 6) The entire structure, including the wax rods, is the encased in investment material, with only the ends of the wax rods visible. 7) The investment is placed into a kiln, where the temperature is gradually brought up until the wax rods melt, leaving tunnels or vents that allow all the wax, including that of the sculpture, to “burn out” of the investmen, hence lost-wax.

8) The heated investment “mold,” void of wax, is now removed from the kiln, and molten bronze is poured into the casting gate – the large opening in th etop of the investment. 9) Once the investment mold has cooled, it is chipped away from the bronze structure, revealing the sculpture fully realized in bronze. The surface is ready to be cleaned up and finished. Because lost-wax casting replaces the wax with bronze, it is often referred to as replacement process. Large pieces are cast in several pieces and welded together. The Greeks took advantage of the malleability of the metal and pounded their sections together.

Sculptural Technique 4: Assemblage David Hammons’s Spade with Chains (1973) is an example of assemblage, another additive sculptural process. Hammons has combined found materials – a garden spade and a set of ehains, into a face that recalls an African mask. This transformation of common materials into art is one of the most defining characteristics of assemblage. The piece works effectively at a cultural level, as Hammons uses two symbols of slave labor, the shovel and the chain, to create the image of the mask, a reaffirmation of the American slave’s African heritage.

Clyde Connell’s sculpture Swamp ritual (1972) is fabricated of parts of rusted tractors and machines, discarded building materials, logs and papier-mache, which Connell found well suited to binding the wood and iron elements of her work together. Clyde Connell, Swamp Ritual (mixed media, 1972)

Sculptural Technique 5: Earthworks Since the 1960s, a focus of contemporary sculpture has been larg outdoor environments. Nancy Hold’s Sun Tunnels (1973 – 76) consists of four 22-ton concrete tunnels aligned with the rising and setting sun during the solstices. The pattern of the boles cut into the tunnels duplicates constellations, and the size of each hold is based on the brightness of each star it represents. The work is designed to be experienced on site, imparting to viewers a wense of their own relationship to the cosmos.

Earthworks (Environment art) Since the 1960s, a focus of contemporary sculpture has been large outdoor environments. Viewers can experience the space and sense of the vastness and emptiness around them, a limitless freedom and time without end – a feeling of the sublime. Near Quemado, New Mexico, Walter de Maria created the Lightning Field (1977). Consisting of 400 large vertical steel poles laid out over rearly a square mile, th ework is activated by thunderstorms that frequent the region. During these times, lightning jumps from pole to pole across the grid in a stunning display of pyrotechnics. Visitors may or may not experience the poles activated by lightning, but they still can experience the space and sense of the vastness and emptiness around them, a limitless freedom and time without end – a feeling of the sublime.
